360 Link: Administration Console -- CrossRef Options

    • Product: 360 Link

How do I configure CrossRef options in the 360 Link Administration Console?

This page is part of a larger set of documentation about using the Administration Console to configure your 360 Link service.

Libraries using the legacy 360 Link interface should jump here. If you are not sure which version of 360 Link your library uses, check your 360 Link Administration Console settings.

The CrossRef Options page in the 360 Link Administration Console allows you to customize the two ways that 360 Link can present full text linking via CrossRef: CrossRef Lookup and DOI Resolution:
360 Link Admin Console: CrossRef Options
Changes to the CrossRef configuration will not be visible to your 360 Link patrons until after the daily profile data refresh; to see how your changes will look without having to wait, click Preview.

    CrossRef Lookup

You can have 360 Link display a CrossRef link if a citation does not include a DOI number but a certain amount of metadata is available, and the 360 Link results page displays a link to a resource that is indexed in CrossRef.
Clicking on the Search CrossRef link (see screenshot below) initiates an attempt to match the article metadata with a DOI in CrossRef's index:
    CrossRef linking via DOI
If a DOI is found, CrossRef will generate an article-level link that uses the DOI to access full text via the DOI System:
360 Link Results - CrossRef Lookup Successful

If a DOI is not found, a message is displayed indicating that the item is not available via CrossRef:
360 Link Results - CrossRef Lookup Failed
The CrossRef Lookup section in the Administration Console gives you the ability to configure when the CrossRef link is displayed:
360 Link Admin Console - CrossRef Lookup
    • Always display the CrossRef link any time the above-mentioned criteria is met: DOI number not included in citation, a certain amount of metadata exists, and 360 Link results page displays a link to a resource that is indexed in CrossRef.
    • Only display when no article-level links are present on the 360 Link page (in other words, only journal-level links or database-level links are displayed).
    • Never display the CrossRef Lookup link.
By default, the Always option is selected, although we recommend selecting the second option: Only display when no article-level links are present. To change the setting, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page, choose the appropriate radio button for the Display setting, and click Save. CrossRef display changes will not be visible to patrons until the next day.
You can also choose to customize the default text displayed when a match is not made with a DOI in CrossRef's index. The default wording is, "Sorry, CrossRef was unable to find a full-text link for your citation." To customize the message, click the View/Edit link next to No Results Message to go to the the Custom Text page. Please note that the default wording for No Results Message includes an html link to a CrossRef image. Customizing this message does not require inclusion of an html link unless you want to keep the CrossRef image or if you want to include some other image.

NOTE: The current version of the 360 Link Results Page does not present patrons with a customizable Results Message nor a customizable Searching Message. Those messages are only used by the legacy 360 Link Results Page.

    DOI Resolution

You can have 360 Link display a CrossRef link if a citation does include a DOI number, and the DOI is indexed in CrossRef. Clicking on the link provided by CrossRef (see screenshot below) will make 360 Link access the full text via the DOI System (www.doi.org):
360 Link Results - CrossRef Lookup Successful
By default, DOI Resolution is turned ON. To turn it OFF, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page and un-check the Enable DOI Resolution box:

CrossRef Options in Legacy 360 Link

The CrossRef Options page in the 360 Link Administration Console allows you to customize the two ways that 360 Link can present full text linking via CrossRef: CrossRef Lookup and DOI Resolution:

Changes to the CrossRef configuration will not be visible to your 360 Link patrons until after the daily profile data refresh; to see how your changes will look without having to wait, click Preview.

    CrossRef Lookup

You can have 360 Link display a CrossRef link if a citation does not include a DOI number but a certain amount of metadata is available, and the 360 Link results page displays a link to a resource that is indexed in CrossRef.
Clicking on the CrossRef Article link (see screenshot below) initiates an attempt to match the article metadata with a DOI in CrossRef's index:
    CrossRef linking via DOI
If a DOI is found, CrossRef will generate an article-level link that uses the DOI to access full text via the DOI System. If a DOI is not found, a message is displayed indicating that the item is not available via CrossRef.
The CrossRef Lookup section in the Administration Console gives you the ability to configure when the CrossRef link is displayed:

    • Always display the CrossRef link any time the above-mentioned criteria is met: DOI number not included in citation, a certain amount of metadata exists, and 360 Link results page displays a link to a resource that is indexed in CrossRef.
    • Only display when no article-level links are present on the 360 Link page (in other words, only journal-level links or database-level links are displayed).
    • Never display the CrossRef Lookup link.
By default, the Always option is selected. To change the setting, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page, choose the appropriate radio button for the Display setting, and click Save. CrossRef display changes will not be visible to patrons until the next day.
You can also choose to customize the default text for CrossRef Lookup linking:
    • Results Message is the text displayed on the 360 Link results page if a match is made with a DOI in CrossRef's index and 360 Link is ready to try accessing the full text via the DOI System. The default wording is, "Try doi.org for full-text":
    Try DOI
    • No Results Message is the text displayed if a match is not made with a DOI in CrossRef's index. The default wording is, "Sorry, CrossRef was unable to find a full-text link for your citation."
    • Searching Message is the text displayed briefly when a user clicks the "Publisher via CrossRef" link and 360 Link searches for a match with a DOI in CrossRef's index. The default wording is, "Please wait. Searching CrossRef for the full text for your citation":
      360 Link: CrossRef Searching Message
To customize a message, click the appropriate View/Edit link to go to the appropriate message on the Custom Text page. Please note that the default wording for No Results Message and Searching Message includes an html link to a CrossRef image. Customizing either of these messages does not require inclusion of an html link unless you want to keep the CrossRef image or if you want to include some other image.

    DOI Resolution

You can have 360 Link display a CrossRef link if a citation does include a DOI number, and the DOI is indexed in CrossRef. Clicking on the Article link provided by CrossRef (see screenshot below) will make 360 Link access the full text via the DOI System (www.doi.org):

By default, DOI Resolution is turned ON. To turn it OFF, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page and un-check the Enable DOI Resolution box:
