360 Link: Administration Console -- Citation Managers

    • Product: 360 Link

How do I configure the Citation Managers in the 360 Link Administration Console?

This page is part of a larger set of documentation about using the Administration Console to configure your 360 Link service.

Libraries using the legacy 360 Link interface should jump here. If you are not sure if your library uses the legacy or the improved interface with Index-Enhanced Direct Linking, check your 360 Link Administration Console settings.

Citation Managers in 360 Link with Index-Enhanced Direct Linking (IEDL)

The 360 Link sidebar helper frame and the 360 Link results pages include options for exporting, and emailing the citation from a patron's search results.
Administering this feature is done via the Client Center. In the Manage Your Products section of the Client Center Home page, click on the 360 Link: Administration Console and then click on the Citation Managers link on the left side. You'll see the Citation Managers page:
    Citation Managers
360 Link supports exporting/saving a citation to RefWorks (both the New RefWorks and legacy RefWorks), EndNote Web, EndNote Desktop, ProCite and Reference Manager. Exporting to RefWorks and EndNote Web takes the patron directly to the provider's login site. Because EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager are desktop applications, 360 Link prepares the export file which the patron can then choose to save or open up the appropriate desktop program and export.
360 Link also supports emailing a citation in RIS, Plain Text, or HTML format. When emailing a citation in Plain Text, or HTML format, 360 Link supports displaying the citation in the following citation styles:
    • AMA (American Medical Association) - 9th Edition
    • APA (American Psychological Association) - 6th Edition
    • Chicago/Turabian: Author-Date - 15th Edition
    • Chicago/Turabian: Humanities - 15th Edition
    • MLA (Modern Language Association) - 7th Edition
    • Vancouver/ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors)
The email and export options display at the bottom of 360 Link's Sidebar Helper frame on the right side of the screen (on the 360 Link results pages, the email and export options display on the right side of the page). If the patron has multiple options they will be presented when they click on that option as seen below.

When you are ready to start configuring your bibliographic citation management, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page.

    Bibliographic Citation Management
    1. Check the box next to Enable Citation Management.
    2. The Select Citation Managements Display in Export / Save section lets you select which export and save options you want to make available to your users. As long as one option is selected, the patron will automatically see (in addition to the Export / Save link) an email link providing all three formats (RIS, plain text, and HTML).
    • Note that the Directly to RefWorks option will automatically re-direct to New RefWorks if the user is already logged in to New RefWorks, or if the user has been logged in to New RefWorks in the last 14 days.
    1. The Select Citation Styles Displayed for Plain Text, and HTML in Export / Save and Email section let you select which citation styles you want to make available to your patrons when they export, save, or email the citation in plain text, or HTML format.
    2. After you make changes, click Save, or click Cancel to discard your changes.
Changes will not be visible to your 360 Link patrons until the next day; to see how your changes will look without having to wait, click Preview.
Editing the default text for a label or message can be done via the Custom Text page in the Administration Console. Bibliographic Citation Management texts are in the Advanced list of custom texts.
When your patrons click on either the Email or Export button, they may be prompted to identify which program to export to, even if only one application is installed.
The Firefox browser works slightly differently with desktop applications (EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager) compared to other browsers. Firefox automatically handles the file type association so that a user is not prompted to identify which program to export to. With other browsers, your patron may be prompted to identify which program to export to, even if only one application is installed.

    • Vancouver/ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors)
In this example, the patron has multiple citation email and export/save options, so there is a drop-down arrow next to Email and Export/Save to indicate multiple options. The "Always check the citation for accuracy" link displays information to remind the patron that citation formats evolve over time and 360 Link cannot guarantee the citation generated by 360 Link conforms to the particular style:
