360 Link: PubMed Outside Tool Instructions, Part II

    • Product: 360 Link

How can I set up 360 Link with PubMed's Outside Tool?

This document covers Part II of PubMed Outside Tool setup. For information on your 360 Link Results Page and PubMed's Outside Tool, please refer to Part I.

Setting up PubMed's Outside Tool service can be broken down into two steps. Click the link to jump to that section of this document:

    Find additional information from PubMed:

Step 1 - Evaluation: Testing PubMed with 360 Link

PubMed has supplied six specific PMIDs that they want you to test. (These will most likely not provide any links to full text because these are not journals that ProQuest tracks. Do not be alarmed by this.) They are as follows -- be sure to add your base URL, which can be found in Library Settings in the Client Center:

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:15880265

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:14316043

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:15390390

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:12337850

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:12076440

    • <Your Base URL>/OpenURL_local?sid=Entrez:PubMed&id=pmid:12259237

Remember to add your base URL to each string so that it looks something like the following:

Please be sure to test each of these URLs to ensure that they're working; you should get to a 360 Link Results screen. If you are not able to get any of the six URLs to work, please notify us with the Support Portal option.

If you are successful with all of your links, please proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 - Registration: Send proof to PubMed to show that 360 Link supports PubMed

Send an email to lib-linkout@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Use the subject, Request to set up an Outside Tool. In the message body, include the following items:
    1. Proof of providing qualified resources from all PubMed records. List the PMIDs tested, the complete URL constructed for testing, and describe the resource your service provides for each one (see Evaluating Your OpenURL-based Service).

      Examples:

    2. If applicable, a user name and password that NCBI staff can use temporarily to view the ILL form. No requests will be sent; it is only necessary for viewing the form.

    3. The base URL of your local service.

    4. Name of the institution, postal address, email address, and phone number for a contact person.

      Name of institution:
      Postal address of institution:

      Name of contact person:
      Email address:
      Phone number:

    5. The URL for the icon that identifies your institution's service in PubMed. Your icon should adhere to the following recommendations:

      • The recommended size is 100 by 25 pixels, and the maximum size is 120 by 30 pixels.

      • Should look like a button so that users recognize it as something that is clickable.

      • Should have an outline or border.

      • Should not have a white or transparent background and should not blend in with PubMed's display.

      • Should be in one of the following image formats: GIF, JPEG, or PNG.

For more details and examples of icons, see LinkOut Technical Information > Icons.

    6. The URL of an HTML help page that explains your service, to be used in My NCBI.

    7. A short label (fewer than 50 characters) that identifies your institution and local service in My NCBI. Outside Tools are listed alphabetically in My NCBI, so we recommend beginning the label with your institution name. NCBI reserves the right to adjust this label.

    8. Indicate whether you would like a period of testing during which your Outside Tool is not listed in My NCBI but is available through the otool parameter.
