360 MARC Updates: No CONSER Record Available

In some cases we can't provide a record because CONSER simply hasn't cataloged that particular journal. In other cases, we may have a CONSER record but the journal holding has not yet been matched up to the record ("normalized") in our title authority system. We update our CONSER database on a regular basis so we always have the latest set. Plus, we constantly increase the number of journal holdings that are normalized to a CONSER record. In fact, Serials Solutions offers the best available holdings and bibliographic information in the industry.

However, there are isolated databases that remain a challenge for us, such as LexisNexis, Westlaw, Factiva, IEEE, or databases with a large proportion of non-serials content, like Investext Plus, ISI Emerging Markets, and Business Source Premier. Libraries with these databases may find that their percentage of CONSER records is lower, depending on how large of a share those holdings represent their total electronic journal collection.

We do have several other record options for those cases when we cannot supply a CONSER record: Serials Solutions Original records, which are cataloged and edited in-house; vendor-generated records (from content providers such as Gale); National Library of Medicine (NLM) records; and Serials Solutions Supplemental Brief Records (machine-generated records created each delivery using the current holdings data we have on file for a given journal). Opting to receive these record types will help increase the number of records we deliver. In particular, when selected, the Supplemental Brief Records are created for every journal that does not have another record available, which guarantees maximum coverage for your electronic journal collection.
