360 MARC Updates: Supplemental Briefs Overview

    • Product: 360 MARC Updates

    What are supplemental brief records?

Receiving records from a variety of MARC resources will get you closer to 100% collection coverage than relying on CONSER or Library of Congress records only. That's why you can elect to get a supplemental set of 360 MARC brief neutral records. These brief records are created by identifying the holdings in your collection that did not have a MARC record available. By using the title/ISSN combination and holdings information we know about, we can generate records to fill in coverage gaps.

Key points to consider before electing to receive 360 MARC brief neutral records:

    1. Each brief record has a stable identifier that allows us to track brief records in the same way we track all of the other MARC records we provide. The stable ID means that libraries will get new/change/delete briefs, but there will be less 'movement' overall with records in and out of their OPAC. The stable ID is called the SSIB. This identifier follows the same 'conventions' as our current identifiers: Example of the SSJ number from legacy system: ssj0007432 / Example of the SSIB number: ssib001571424.
    2. We try to aggregate holdings for duplicate titles into a single brief record, but the aggregation is based on the title/ISSN combinations matching exactly. You could potentially end up with multiple brief records for the same title if the titles have slight differences.
    3. Some of the holdings could match titles in our 360 KB title authority database, but haven't yet been associated with the correct MARC record. In these cases you could end up with a MARC record for some of the holdings for any given title, and one or more brief records for the same title
    4. Journal brief records consist of: title, ISSN (if available), holdings dates, URL, and provider name. eBook records may contain further data points, based on the information we have available from each provider.
    5. Brief records are included in the file set you receive for your 360 MARC records. (Previously, they were delivered in a separate file.) This optimizes the delivery of files to you, especially if you are loading both journal and eBook record files.
    6. If you have chosen to use the hosted 856 option (style 1) in the brief records, the URL will perform a "Title Begins With" search for that title in your E-Journal Portal.
    7. We also support diacritical marks (accent marks) in our brief records. This means that if a title includes non-Latin characters, we can provide a brief record with accent marks for that title.
    • For example, an accented character by default appears as follows: 01 R{nonjoin}seaux
    • When we replace it with a non-accented character it appears as follows: 01 R seaux
If you choose this option we will match your current MARC record profile as much as possible within the limitations imposed by the amount of data we have to work with. For example, we can provide a 655 genre field with "Electronic Journals" and a corporate authority name in the 710 field.
