360 Search: Full-Text Links Don't Appear With All Search Results

    • Product: 360 Search

Why doesn't the OpenURL link from 360 Link (or another link resolver) appear with every 360 Search result?

360 Link links will only appear in the 360 Search results pages for results that meet the following metadata criteria: (title or ISSN) and volume and issue. When all of that metadata is present, your OpenURL links will appear, but if any of it is missing, no OpenURL link will be available for the citation in question.

Serials Solutions uses this logic because it provides the best results overall across the entire set of link resolvers and content providers that work with 360 Search (acknowledging that some 360 Search clients use a link resolver other than Serials Solutions' 360 Link). The issue number is required by some link resolvers and some content providers to provide an article-level link, so making the issue number optional in 360 Search's logic may result in a citation page (link-resolver page) that does not actually provide an article-level link. Thus, if we cannot guarantee that an article-level link is available for most link resolvers and most content providers most of the time, then we are hesitant to deploy logic in 360 Search that might result in those dead ends.
