Authority cross references from 4XX tags with 3-character $w cannot be matched

As far as I know, tab20 is meant to allow matching of 4XX tags with a 3-character $w.
My question is: how to indicate "blank" in pos.4 of $$w?
Resolution:
to achieve this you can set tab20 as follows:
w !!! * --- for space followed by a char
w !!! --- for space at the end
