How assign both a permanent and a temporary location to an item

Description:
We have books that we want to keep permanently in our closed stacks collection (which uses a sequential shelf location scheme) but that we want to shelve for a temporary period as a reference work in our Reading Room (which uses a subject based classification scheme). When we catalogue that item we want therefore to assign a permanent location/call number, and a temporary location/call number to the item such that:
- only one location and call number displays in full record view while the item is in the reference collection
- the permanent location and call number displays when it is removed from the reference collection.
We also have serials where only the current issue is in the reference collection and previous numbers are in the permanent collection.
After some discussion at the time of migration, we have not defined holdings records for monographs, but only for serials. We have been assigning two call numbers to a monograph item, but this results in the display of both locations/call numbers when we display the PST expanded field in the full record view in the OPAC. We only want to display the current shelf location, but the PST and LOC fields don't allow us to distinguish. We need to display the call number in the full record view because our users often print this display to come to the reference desk and request a book. Of course when we are dealing with serials where items are found in both places we want to display both locations and call numbers.
Resolution:
You should take a look at the Change/Restore Item Information in the Circ client under the Items menu. I think that this should do what you want....
GUI Circ -> Items -> Change Item Information and
GUI Circ -> Items -> Restore Item Information
