How to temporarily turn off e-Reserve copyright protection

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 17.01

    Description:
Last week, during implementation of course roster protection for e-reserve documents, we found it necessary to temporarily remove protection. This was done manually, by changing the radio button setting for each document that had earlier been protected.

Is there an easier, faster way to do this--a global command or procedure that can temporarily disable such protection while allowing it to be restored again?

    Resolution:
As described in Sections 7.2 and 7.3 of the "System Librarian’s Guide – Course Reading and Reserves", the copyright is enforced by the $$4 subfield in the 856 field of the e-Reserve doc records. (The 856 $$4 is Aleph-specific; it does not exist in MARC.)

If you want to temporarily disable this function, you could use the p_manage_21 global-change service to change the $$4 to $$5. (The 856 $$5 also does not exist in MARC.) Then, when you are done, you could use p_manage_21 to change the $$5 back to $$4.
