Is it safe to delete files znn.seq files (such as z98.seq) from $data_files?

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 19.01

    Description:
We are trying to clear out as many unnecessary files as possible to help with work on our reclass project, which is a real hog for disc space. One type of file which seems to occupy a lot of space is '.seq' (not .seqaa but plain .seq; e.g. z98.seq); from documents on the Doc Portal I gather that these are generated as part of an index build, but it seems that they are not really needed thereafter (a skim-read of the 'Indexing Technical Issues.ppt' suggests that their retention is 'optional' though does not say how this option is chosen).

Is it safe to delete such files, especially once one is confident that the index build was successful?

    Resolution:
p_manage_01 loads each z98 segment into $data_files/z98.seq prior to loading it into Oracle. Each such z98.seq overwrites the previous. The z98.seq which you see is the last one that it did. The only case this might be of use would be when all the other steps were successful but the load of this last segment failed. Thus, this z98.seq has no value and can be deleted after the job finishes successfully.

The same is true of znn.seq files left from other indexing jobs.

The znn.seqaa, seqab, etc., files are produced by p_file_03 backups and should be deleted only if you are certain they are no longer needed.
