    Oracle logfiles filling up disk

    Description:
We had an issue this weekend with the amount of free disk space on our production machine in the /exlibris2 partition. It looks like the /exlibris2/oradata/aleph1/arch has a lot of Oracle logfiles which are taking up a lot of space. The logfiles are timestamped 3 minutes apart. Did someone increase the frequency of the creation of logfiles? It looks like I need to start monitoring these files and deleting some. Why all of a sudden are we creating so many logfiles? I want to make sure there's nothing I need to do on my end to monitor/limit the amount of logfiles created in this directory.

    Resolution:
The number of Oracle logfiles written does not have to do with any "frequency" parameter. A logfile is written when the amount of logged data reaches a certain threshold. What causes lots of logfiles to be created is lots of updates to Oracle tables. Lots of updates are almost always the result of batch jobs (such as the p_manage_18 or p_manage_18) or ue processes (such as ue_01 or ue_08). Check the run_e_01 and run_e_08 log files in the xxx01 $data_scratch directory. Large logs indicate lots of updates. Each update has a separate entry in the log.
