Support of Java 7 in Aleph

Question

The end of life (EOL) date of Java SE 6 is November 2012. When will Aleph support Java 7?

Answer

Note:  Though this question pertains to older versions of Aleph and Java, it is being kept because the principles it describes are still valid.

EOL does not mean you cannot use a Java release. EOL just means the end of public support and fixes and for that reason, you are encouraged to update to the latest stable release (Java SE 7).

Ex Libris will continue to update Java SE 6 with any critical security fixes made available through Java Support. At the moment do not plan to implement Java SE 7 in Q1/Q2 2013 for any of our Ex Libris products.

Note that Java is used in two places in Aleph:
- Java Virtual Machine for printing on client side
- JBoss-functionality on server side

Regarding support of Java Virtual Machine on Aleph client: “Requirements for Aleph Installation”-documents (both for Aleph 20 and 21) are saying “requires Sun Java Virtual Machine version 1.4 or later”. So we do not expect any problems when the Java environment on desktop PC is updated to latest Java version and you use a later version of Java Virtual Machine.

Regarding support on server side: Upgrade of Java on the server is done initiated by Ex Libris via 3rd party upgrade. Customers should never upgrade the Java on the server on their own.  Ex Libris certified Tomcat 7 for use with Aleph version 22.   

Additional Information

At the moment we are not aware of issues with printing using Java 7 or Java 8 (on the PC).
