System not assigning unique item barcodes

The catalogers say that, if they leave the barcode blank when creating an item, the system assigns a barcode and then gives an error message that it's not a unique barcode ("Duplicate barcode"). (Which is true.)
Does this mean the barcode counter needs to be reset? (If so, where is that?)
(Note: the message "Duplicate barcode" always pertains to items; duplicate *patron* barcodes get a different message. The only exception is the "Duplicate Barcode record" message in Fast Patron Registration.)
Resolution:
The counter for the item barcode is last-barcode-number in the ADM library util g/2. See link to article 000050350 ("System-generated item barcodes") in Additional Information below.
(The counter for the *patron* barcode is last-bor-id-1.)
