    User license limits for Z39.50

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
I have a few questions about the Z39.50 server.

I see in the license that we have 25 Z39.50 users. How is the number of simultaneous users calculated, and what happens when the limit is reached?

    Resolution:
There are two different aspects of time counting in z39.50 server

    1. License timeout - Let’s say z39.50 server has 5 licenses (MAX-Z39-USERS in file license is equal to 5). If some z39.50 client connects to our z39.50 server it “takes” one license. So now there are only 4 free z39.50 server licenses.

If this z39.50 client is idle (does not send any requests) for 120 seconds our z39.50 server “frees” its license. So now there are 5 free z39.50 server licenses.

    2. Z39.50 server connection timeout - Let’s say a z39.50 client connects to our z39.50 server. If z39.50 client is idle (does not send any request) Z39.50 server keeps connection for 1 hour. After that it closes the connection. Please note that this timeout does not affect license counting.

That is if we are speaking about z39.50 license counting – the timeout is 120 seconds. If we are speaking about connection timeout – the timeout is 1 hour.

Note: Even though the z39_server process queries the pc_server, this is not calculated as a GUI-USER for licensing purposes.
