    ue_01 hanging processing EEBO records

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
I am finding that our background indexing process (ue_01) has been hanging regularly when trying to process records which have been loaded using p_manage_18. We started having this problem back when I was working with Jerry Specht on some authorities problems, but this problem continues even for ABC01 processing.

When started, ue_01 seems to work properly for some time. Then, at some point or on some random record, the process will stop draining the z07 table and simply hang. Using util/e/2 to stop the process only stops the word_index and z0102 background processes. ue_01_a actually hangs until actually killed at the server. The process can then be restarted using util/e/1 and will, sometimes start draining the z07 records again; other times it does not.

In order to make sure we did not have leftover remnants of the testing which Jerry and I did earlier, I tried completely copying all executables from our production server, where we have not seen this problem. The directory /exlibris/aleph/a18_1/aleph/exe was completely copied over from the production server and replaced that directory on the test server. This did not address the hanging issue.

So, I need some help tracking down the problem. Right now, the process seems to be hung on one of the records and it is not clear what record that is or why it is hanging. But, generally speaking, we need some help figuring out why this hanging process problem seems to be continuing on such a regular basis.

    Resolution:
[Diagnostics showed that it was inconsistent: sometimes ue_01 hung processing the z13; other times, the Word or ACC Headings indexing.]

    [From site:]
We did try another load of completely different records. This was a smaller set, but we ran into no problems at all with indexing with this round.

I guess the next thing is to run some of the indexing programs (p_manage_01/02/07/27) just to be sure that the EEBO records don't cause problems with that. If they don't, then we just load the records in small chunks and restart indexing as necessary until they are all in.
