z39_server: "Aleph error. Service: C9902. Code: 88. License limit exceeded."

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Problem Symptoms:
Shortly after a server reboot, the following error appears in the z39_server log:

Aleph error. Service: C9902. Code: 88. License limit exceeded.

and util y/11/1 ("Main License file") shows:

    Z39 SERVER:
    Licensed Z39 users: 000000005
    Active Z39 users : 000000005

    Even after stopping the z39_server!

    Cause:
Uncertain. See analysis in Additional Information below.

    Resolution:
It seems that either time or a *second* restart of the z39_server corrected the problem. See analysis in Additional Information below.

    Additional Information

    Analysis:

The ./pc_com/pc_license_limit program is calculating the number of Active Z39 users by checking for vir01 z65 records with z65_type = 'Z39-SERVER' where the difference between the current time and the z39_time is more than two minutes.

Thus, the performance of util y/11/1 should be postponed for at least two minutes.

If the problem persists even with the z39_server stopped, one approach would be to use SQL to delete all of the z65 records with z65_type = 'Z39-SERVER'. (The worst that could happen is that some users would need to reperform their z39.50 requests.)

It's unclear this problem occurring in proximity to the reboot of the server was somehow relevant ... or just a coincidence.
