z39 server creating very large log files

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Problem Symptoms:
The z39_server log file grows to more than 1 Gig in less than one week.

    Cause:
    See Resolution below.

    Resolution:
    1. As described in Article 000004693 ("How often should Aleph be shut down/restarted?") we suggest weekly restarts of Aleph.
The Aleph restart will restart the z39_server, which causes a new log to be created. OR

    2. Change the Z39_SERVER_LOG_LEVEL parameter. It is defined in $alephe_tab/aleph_start and can have 3 values: "protocol", "all", and "customized".

If this parameter is not defined, the default is "all". Try setting it to "protocol".

After confirming that it is not already present in aleph_start, insert it after "setenv N_OF_SERVERS" :

    setenv Z39_SERVER_LOG_LEVEL protocol

Then do "source aleph_start" at the Unix command line and restart the z39_server.
