Summary
Supplemental issues may be displayed on the JSTOR platform in several different ways or may be unavailable in certain cases. If a supplement is not available in JSTOR's journal backfile collections, or if the supplement has been digitized and indexed under its own title, then it is possible that links generated through the Link Resolver can lead to error pages when users attempt to access these materials. Please see below for more information about JSTOR's process for evaluating supplements.

JSTOR’s Official Statement

JSTOR completes a title history review for each title added to the platform and attempts to include the complete back run of a title, including previous titles in the back run and supplements when available.

With that in mind, JSTOR frequently includes supplemental issues, but they may be displayed on the JSTOR platform in different ways.

  • Supplemental issues can be digitized as part of the parent journal

  • A supplemental title can be included as a separate title on JSTOR

JSTOR takes a number of factors into account when making decisions about how supplements will be displayed, as described below:

The most straightforward situation occurs when one or more supplemental issues are published in addition to issues numbered as part of a journal’s regular numbering sequence. In this situation, supplemental issues are digitized as part of the parent journal’s back run.

This decision is made when issues of the supplement carry the parent journal title, ISSN, numbering scheme, etc., and are interspersed with issues of the parent title on the publisher’s or journal’s website.

However, when supplement titles have their own numbering system unrelated to the parent title, don’t feature the parent title prominently, or are published as books with their own ISBN, JSTOR is more likely to digitize the supplement as a separate title on JSTOR.

In general, supplements are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and decisions are made based on JSTOR’s title history research, publishers’ preferences and expectations, treatment of the print source in our partner libraries, and any anticipated impacts on the user experience.

In some cases, JSTOR cannot include supplemental titles, either because the publisher did not wish to include them or because the titles did not align with JSTOR’s collection development strategy. However, as described above, JSTOR does endeavor to include supplemental titles whenever possible.

How the Process Works
1. Identification of Unique Identifiers: Each record is associated with unique identifiers such as ISSN/EISSN.
2. Metadata Processing: Once identified, the connection to the Knowledge Base ensures the content’s availability in Primo/Summon.
3. Availability in Primo/Summon: After providing availability, a link to JSTOR collections is generated based on metadata such as volume, issue, page numbers, and ISSN.
Ex Libris' Link Resolver method is designed to connect users to journal content; however, the issue arises because the content is not available on the JSTOR platform.

Although the CDI records for these supplemental issues are not directly sent to us by JSTOR, content availability can still be ensured through coverage from other publishers and providers.

For more information about alternative coverage, please refer to: Alternative Coverage and CDI Records

Unfortunately, there is no way to filter out these invalid links from search results without impacting access to valid JSTOR content.
