Configuring Collection Discovery for the NDE UI

The Collections Lobby

The Collections Lobby page, which opens after selecting Collection Discovery in the Main Menu Bar, displays all top-level collections. For each collection, up to four images from the collection are displayed. The Collections Lobby appears as follows in the NDE UI:

Users can select a specific collection from this page or search for items within all collections and sub-collections. Note that searches from the Collection Lobby are performed only for items, not for collections/sub-collections. Within collections, the search is performed for both sub-collections and items.

The Collection Page

Selecting a collection or sub-collection opens its Collection page, which displays all its sub-collections and items.

If a collection or sub-collection has both sub-collections and items, the items are listed after the sub-collections.

On a Collection page, users can perform the following operations:

Select a sub-collection to open its Collection page.
Select an item to open its full display, which enables users to view the item's details, services, and collection path and to open the item's digital representation in the browser.

Select an item's Save Record icon to save it to User Area > Saved Records.
Display the list of items in either Grid (displays resource type, title, and image) or Gallery (displays resource type and image) view. Hovering over the item in Gallery view displays the title.
Search for sub-collections and items within a collection. For more information, see Searching a Collection's Items.
Sort the list of sub-collections and items. For more information, see Sorting Sub-Collections and Items.

Searching a Collection's Items

The Collection page enables users to search for and filter relevant items in the collection and its sub-collections. This is very helpful for collections that contain many items and sub-collections. Search queries are matched against any search field (title, author, and subject) and may include the following search operators to provide a more complex search query: AND, OR, and NOT.

When searching in a collection that contains more than 200 sub-collections, the search automatically terminates after the first 200 sub-collections have been searched, and the search results only include items that were found in these 200 sub-collections. In such a case, if the item sought is not found, it is recommended to search directly in the sub-collections of the collection.

Sorting Sub-Collections and Items

A collection may contain both items and sub-collections, and there can be multiple levels of sub-collections in each collection. On each level, the sub-collections are sorted separately from the items. The sub-collections appear first, sorted in accordance with the currently selected sort option, and then the items appear, also sorted in accordance with the currently selected sort option.

You can change the sort order of the items and sub-collections currently displayed by selecting an option in the Sort by drop-down list, as follows:

Relevance, Title – When selected, these options are applied to both the sub-collections and the items at the current level. Relevance sorts them in accordance with the order in which they are arranged in the collection's configuration in Alma, while Title sorts them based on their names.
Date-newest, Date-oldest, or Author – When selected, these options are applied only to the items at the current level, while the sub-collections at that level are sorted by Relevance (the order in which they are arranged in the collection's configuration).

Configuring the Default Sort Order

The default sort order is configured in Alma:

The order in which the sub-collections and the items in a collection appear can be changed manually (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections > [Edit a collection] in the Sub-collections and Title List tabs, respectively). This sort order is what is implemented in the NDE UI when Relevance is selected under Sort by.
By default, when a collection is first opened in the NDE UI, it is sorted by Relevance. This can be changed by selecting a different sort option in the collection's configuration (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections > [Edit a collection], in the Discovery tab), under Sort titles by.

Searching for Collections in Library Search

Users can also search for collections directly from Library Search. Selecting a collection from the results opens it on the Collection page, not the Full Display page.

Regardless of inventory, collections are considered available online content and are filtered as such.

Deep Links

Users can link directly to the Collections Lobby or a Collection Page using the following link format:

Integration with Specto - Links to Exhibitions

In the NDE UI, Primo VE customers who also subscribe to Specto can include links to Specto exhibitions in the configurations of collections in Alma. When these links exist, Primo VE adds links to these exhibitions to both the Collections Lobby page and the Collection page.

At present, this functionality is supported for collections but not for sub-collections. In the future, support for sub-collections will be added.

Adding a Specto Exhibition to a Collection

A link to a Specto exhibition can be added to a collection in the collection's configuration (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections > [Edit the collection]) in the Discovery tab, under Specto Exhibition.

Display of the Link in Primo VE

When a link to a Specto exhibition is included in a collection's configuration, the link appears as shown below. Selecting the link opens the exhibition in a new window/tab.

Configuration Options

The following table describes the configuration options that support this functionality.

For collection discovery testing, the premium sandbox is required.
After running a Suppress Bib Records from Discovery job in Alma, you must re-index the bib records to enable/suppress the discovery of the records. For more information, see Manual Jobs.

Discovery Customer Settings mapping table (Configuration Menu > Discovery > Other > Customer Settings)	Set the view_to_libraries_for_collection_discovery parameter to true if you want to allow collections to be filtered by library/view. For more details, see Discovery Customer Settings. You must also map your views to libraries in your institutions so that they can be filtered accordingly for collection discovery. For more details, see Primo view mapped into Alma libraries mapping table.
View Configuration page (Configuration > Discovery > Display Configuration > Configure Views)	Update the following options per tab: General tab – The Enable Collection Discovery Features checkbox enables collection discovery at the view level. Top Level Collections (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections)	The Top Level Collections page in Alma defines the collections that appear in Collections Lobby. Collection Resource Editor in Alma (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections > Edit Collection)	The Discovery tab on the Collection Resource Editor page enables you to define up to 20 images that can display in each collection's and sub-collection's tile on the Collection Discovery page, and in the banner on each collection's page. For more information, see Managing Images for the Collections Lobby. If no thumbnails are defined in the Discovery tab, the system displays either the default thumbnail for the collection's associated bibliographic record or the thumbnail uploaded on the General tab in the Collections Lobby and the Collection's page, but not for the thumbnail used for the collection's associated bibliographic record. To specify the default sort order for Collection Discovery in Primo VE: For a Collection/Sub-collection page in Primo VE, you can use the Sort titles by drop-down list on the Discovery tab to set the default sort order to one of the following: Relevance, Title, Author, Date - oldest, or Date - newest. If no option is selected, the default sort order is Relevance, meaning the order set in Alma. For more information, see Configuring the Default Sorting for Titles in Collections. As needed, users can select any of the following sort orders in Primo VE: Relevance, Title, Author, Date - oldest, or Date - newest. For sub-collections displayed on a Collection/Sub-collection page in Primo VE, the default sort order is based the order in which the sub-collections were added to the collection/sub-collection. You can use the Sub-collections tab to customize this list and define its default sort order. For more information, see Sorting / Reordering Sub-Collections. As needed, users can choose to order the sub-collections by either Relevance or Title in Primo VE. For collections displayed in the Collection Lobby, the order of the collections is based on the order in which they are added to the Top Level Collections page (Resources > Manage Inventory > Manage Collections). For information on how to customize the order, see Sorting / Reordering Top-Level Collections. Users cannot sort the collections further in Primo VE.
Alma Metadata Editor (Resources > Cataloging > Open Metadata Editor)	With the Alma Metadata Editor, you can suppress collections from discovery by selecting Record Actions > Suppress from Discovery for the collection's descriptive record in the new MD Editor. See Navigating the New Metadata Editor Page for more information.
