Configuring Newspaper Search for the NDE UI
Introduction
Newspaper Search is a dedicated search interface that enables users to access newspaper articles more easily in Primo VE. It provides access to over a billion newspaper articles and news resources in CDI. When enabled in Primo VE, this functionality improves scholarly content discovery by separating newspaper articles from the main search interface.
The key features of this functionality include the following:
-
Access to more than 350 newspaper collections - many more than previously available.
-
A dedicated Newspaper Search interface has the same look and feel as the main search and results page. It uses the same configuration options for pagination and navigation, sort options, and facets.
Newspapers Search Page with Featured Newspapers (NDE UI)-
Newspaper Search returns only newspaper articles. Newspaper records can be found using the Library and Advanced Search.
-
When the Newspaper Search feature is enabled in Alma:
-
The results from blended searches may include newspaper articles from indexes other than the Central Index.
-
The Creator and New records facets are not available in Newspaper Search.
-
-
-
After performing a simple or advanced search in a CDI search scope, users can select either of the following links from their search results to display matching newspaper articles in Newspaper Search:
-
The Newspapers search link that appears at the bottom of each search results page. (Planned for August 2025.)
-
The Resource Type > Newspaper search facet value under the Tweak my results section:
Newspaper Search Facet Value
When this functionality is enabled, newspaper articles from CDI appear only in Newspaper Search to concentrate focus on scholarly content in search results from simple and advanced searches.
-
-
A featured newspaper lobby page that you can use to promote access to newspapers that are most important to your users. (Planned for August 2025.)
Accessing Newspaper Articles in CDI
When you enable Newspaper Search, newspaper articles from CDI are discoverable only in the Newspaper Search interface. Newspaper records will no longer appear in simple and advanced searches in Primo VE.
When you disable Newspaper Search, only newspaper articles from selected sets of collections are discoverable in regular searches. These collections have the Newspapers field set to Yes.
All newspaper articles indexed with your local catalog continue appearing in regular searches.
CDI marks its collections as follows to indicate whether the collection contains searchable newspaper articles using Newspaper Search in Primo/Primo VE:
-
Yes – The newspaper articles in this collection are available in both the Newspaper Search interface and the regular search interface in Primo/Primo VE.
-
Yes, Newspapers search only – Newspaper articles in this collection are available exclusively via the Newspaper Search interface, not via the regular search interface in Primo/Primo VE.
-
No – This collection does not include any newspaper articles.
When evaluating whether a collection has newspaper articles, we consider the top resource types listed in the Resource Type CDI field.
This information is displayed for each CDI collection on the CDI tab in Alma's Electronic Collection Editor and the CDI collection list for Alma.
