    Upcoming Issues to Note

    Starting with the November release of CDI, fixes and enhancements associated with CDI will be listed by their release date in a new section called CDI-Related Updates to ensure that Primo customers are aware of the availability of these updates. CDI updates are released on the first Wednesday of the month. For example, you can visit this section to track CDI-related items that are released in upcoming months: November 3, 2021, December 1 2021, January 5, 2022, and so forth.

    • Show Journal Coverage Dates in Brief Results Page (NERS) – Allow users to easily understand the electronic coverage of journals from the brief results.

    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – Enable libraries to hide inappropriate or offensive subject terms.

    • Showing all full text links in the View Online for CDI records (NERS).

    Upcoming Issues to Note

    Improved Pagination Experience

    The new pagination method, which allows users to display 10, 25, or 50 results per page on all results pages, is now the default and only pagination method supported.

    Primo_NumberOfResultsAndPaginationSelection.png

    As part of the new pagination method, we have made a performance related change to the results page that renders the results on the top of the page faster than those on the bottom of the page. The bottom results will render as users scroll to the bottom of the page.

    SAML Certificate Workflow Update

    Starting in August 2021, to accommodate the updated expiration policy of the certificate vendors, the signed certificate will be issued twice yearly.

    For example, the certificate made available in August 2021 will expire in June 2022 and the certificate made available in February 2022 will expire in December 2022. This means that institutions that want to use the signed certificate must update it twice a year.

    Ex Libris highly recommends using the provided self-signed certificate to reduce the frequency of certificate updates.

    What's New in February?

    To download other formats of the presentation, select the following links: WebEx or PDF.

    Upcoming Issues to Note

    1. As previously communicated, beginning with the February 2021 release of Primo, we will no longer support the installation of Primo SPs (Service Packs) on Primo environments running Solaris/SunOS. Local Primo (on-premises) customers will receive an error if they attempt to install new SPs on a Primo server running Solaris/SunOS.

    2. Since the application will increase its memory consumption by about 10% with the upgrade to JDK 11, it is recommended that on-premises customers increase the memory on their servers accordingly.

    May Sneak Peek

    • Configure number of results per page and change the current behavior of Load More results to pagination.

    • (NERS) Improve searches that include hyphens (for example, searches for chat-room should also return results that include chatroom).

    Features

    Support Austlang and Custom Languages (NERS 6710)

    November 2021 PRM-44684
    Out of the box, Primo now supports the Austlang language codes under the Language field of the record's full details and under the Language facet in the results. In addition, you can define additional language codes using the new Customized Languages Code mapping table, which currently defines only the Austlang language codes.

    Previously, unsupported codes displayed the Undetermined value. With this enhancement, languages will now display in the record's details:

    PVE_AUSTLANG_Code_Displayed_Properly.png

    Austlang Languages Now Shown in Details Section

    Configuration Options

    Out of the box, the codes for Austlang have been defined for you, but additional configuration may be necessary to display these languages and to configure other custom languages. For detailed configuration information, see Configuring Austlang and Custom Languages for Primo.

    1. Ensure sure that you define the MARC 041 field in your records with the following information:

      • 2nd indicator: Set to 7.

      • Subfield a: Specify your language codes.

      • Subfield 2: Specify the language type (such as austlang).

      For example:

      041    #7$$aN153 $$aA10 $$aN101 $$aK3 $$aL27 $$2austlang

    2. The following tables have been added to support the Austlang languages and any new languages that you want to support. Out of the box, the Austlang languages have been added for you.

      • The Customized Languages Mapping mapping table (Primo Home > General > Mapping Tables) defines the mapping of custom languages (such as those associated with Austlang).

        • A re-index is required to support the new out-of-the-box languages codes.

        • The languages in this mapping table are not supported in the Languages field on the Advanced Search page.

      • The Customized Languages Codes code table (Primo Home > General > Code Tables) allows you to customize and translate the labels for custom languages.

    3. In addition, you will need to update your normalization rules to support custom languages (such as Austlang).

    Collection Discovery - Search Across All Collections

    November 2021 PRM-44406
    The following improvements have been made to collection discovery in Primo:

    • Previously, users could search for items within a specific collection or sub-collection only and find items only in that collection or sub-collection. With this enhancement, a search box has been added to the Collections Lobby to allow users to search for items in all collections and their sub-collections in the Collections Lobby.

      PVE_AllCollectionsSearchBox.png

      Search Box in Collections Lobby

      The following example returns items from all collections and their sub-collections.

      PVE_AllCollectionsSearch.png

      Search Results in Collections Lobby
    • After performing a search from a specific collection or sub-collection, users can now expand the search to all collections in the Collections Lobby by selecting the Try searching in all collections option, which opens the Collections Lobby page and performs the same search in all collections and their sub-collections.

    Exclude eBooks from CDI Results (NERS #6702)

    November 2021 PRM-45387
    We have added a configuration option to exclude eBooks from your CDI results. This option is useful if you prefer to use your own eBook catalog records (in your Primo local index) instead of the eBook records from CDI. If you use this option, all eBook records will be filtered from the CDI results and users will see only your eBook catalog records in blended searches. Chapter-level records are not affected and will still be returned as part of the CDI results.

    This functionality requires an update to CDI, which will become available with the November 3rd release of CDI

    Configuration Options

    This functionality is disabled by default and eBooks will be included in CDI results. If you want to exclude eBook records from CDI results, create and set the excludeCdiEbooks parameter to true in the View Properties mapping table (Primo Home > General > Mapping Tables) for your view.

    If you are also using Rapido, this option should not be used.

    November 2021 PRM-45468
    If available, the Alma/SFX link resolvers use provider-specific document IDs instead of metadata to link to full text on the provider's platform to increase the accuracy of links. Improve Visibility of Services Available from CDI – Match with Multiple ISBNs / EISBNs

    August 2021 PRM-XXXXX
    Previously, only the first ISBN and EISBN were used to retrieve electronic services available from CDI. With this enhancement, Primo will include additional ISBNs and EISBNs (up to five each) to the OpenURL request using the new parameters rft.isbn_list and rft.eisbn_list, and the Alma/SFX link resolver will store these values in the CTO and use them to match active, available portfolios. For information regarding this feature in Alma, see Alma August 2021 Release Notes.

    Add Notification Name to Saved Search Emails

    August 2021 PRM-XXXXX
    With this enhancement users can now provide a name for each alert configured in My Favorites > Saved Searches. When adding an alert to a saved search from either the results or Saved Searches page users will now have the option to specify a notification name:

One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or other reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for or later uses a photo copy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.

    Ongoing Accessibility Improvements (August)

    August 2021 PRM-40953
    As part of our continuous effort to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA, we have made the following improvement for this release:

    • After making multiple facet selections under Tweak my results, an indication will now pop up to JAWS users to indicate that they must select the Apply Filters button at the bottom of the page.

    Improved Pagination Experience

    May 2021 PRM-39882
    In the new Primo UI, users can now specify whether to display 10, 25, or 50 results per page on the following pages:

    • Simple and Advanced search results

    • Journal Search

    • Database Search

    • Browse Search (records page only, not the main Browse page)

    • Citation trail

    • Related items (book chapter, book review, and so forth)

    • Newspaper Search

    In most cases, the new pagination method will be used for the above pages and users will have the option to display the next/previous set of results by selecting the right/left arrow or display a specific set of results by selecting a page number.

    In the following example, the user has selected a maximum of 10 results per page and is currently viewing the second set of 10 results:

    Primo_NumberOfResultsAndPaginationSelection.png

    Number of Results and Page Selection
    • The Results Per Page setting is applied to all types of pages listed above and is retained for the entire session for all users. In addition, this setting applies to the number of items displayed in Collection Discovery.

    • For simple and advanced search results, blocks of search results are displayed as follows for each remote search type:

      • MetaLib – Users will continue using the old method of selecting Load More Results, which appends more results to the same page. Because MetaLib returns 30 results in each bulk, the number of results displayed in Primo is based on the number of results the user has selected for the new paging method and the number of results left to display from each bulk returned from MetaLib:

        • 10 – Each bulk will contain a maximum of 10 results.

        • 25 – If there are 60 results, the first and third bulks will contain 25 results and the second and fourth bulks will contain the remaining 5 results left in each bulk of 30 returned from MetaLib.

        • 50 – Each bulk will contain a maximum of 30 results.

      • CDI, Search WebHooks, EBSCO, and WorldCat – Results display with the new pagination method.

    • The search results are refreshed and returned to the first page each time the Results Per Page field is changed.

    Configuration Options

    For the May release, the new pagination method is disabled by default to allow customers time to adjust any customizations that they may have made to the existing Load More Results area and Paging widget. For August, the plan is to resolve the related known issues and replace the old method for loading pages (except for MetaLib searches) with the new pagination method.

    The following table lists the configuration options associated with this feature.

    Element Description

    Institution Properties mapping table (Primo Home > Advanced Configuration > All Mapping Tables)

    Set the enable_results_per_page parameter to true to activate the new pagination method for your institution. If this parameter does not exist, you will need to add a new mapping row for it.

    View Properties mapping table (Primo Home > Advanced Configuration > All Mapping Tables)

    Set the suspend_watchers_browser_support parameter to ALL to optimize the performance of the new pagination method.

    With the August release, this parameter will no longer be necessary since it will be the default setting.

    Results Tile code table (Primo Home > Advanced Configuration > All Code Tables)

    To customize or translate the label for the Results Per Page field, which appears at the bottom of the various search results pages, update the following code:

    default.nui.results.resultsPerPage: Results Per Page

    aria Labels code table (Primo Home > Advanced Configuration > All Code Tables)

    For screen readers, you can customize or translate the following associated codes:

    • default.nui.aria.paging.numberOfResults: Display {{number}} results per page

    • default.nui.aria.paging.currentNumberOfResults: Current results per page: {{results}}

    • default.nui.aria.currentPage: Current Page: {{page}}

    • default.nui.aria.paging.gotopage: navigate to result page {{number}}

    Analytics

    To support this functionality, the following actions have been added to the Action Usage subject area:

    Group Subgroup Action Description
    Results List General Change number of results per page User changed the Results Per Page field on a results page.

    Improve Search with Hyphens

    May 2021 PRM-44537

    Local respository searches that include a search term with a hyphen will now return additional results by including the term's compound word in the search. For example, searches for the term chat-room, will also include results for chat room and chatroom. Previously, the system only added results for chat room. The supported terms are based on the same terms used for CDI results and are stored in the eng_systemSynonyms file. For more details, see Hyphenated Search Terms. For Cloud customers, please open a Support ticket if further enrichment is necessary.

    Topic/Reference Entry: Update Display Source

    May 2021 PRM-44503
    The database name that was displayed as the source of a reference in the Topic Overview was previously based on the client activation and could be unrelated to the source of the record. With this enhancement, the Source field is now determined as follows:

    • Use addata/jtitle if it exists.

    • If the previous source does not exist, use addata/btitle if it exists.

    • If nether exist, the Source field will not be displayed.

    Ongoing Analytics Improvements (May)

    May 2021 PRM-44904
    As part of our ongoing improvements, the following change was made to Primo Analytics:

    • A column for the Sticky Facets Used flag has been added to the Primo Zero Result Searches report.

    Show Loading Indicator for Alma Get It and View It

    February 2021 NERS NERS Enhancement (ID #6440) PRM-44007
    Because View It and Get It require additional processing to fetch and load information, they may not load as quickly as other sections on the page. With this enhancement, an indication has been added to each section to let users know that information is still loading.

    Primo_LoadingIndicatorViewIt.png

    Loading Indicator in View It

    Configuration Options

    This functionality requires no new configuration, but you can customize the indicator by modifying the following CSS in your customization package:

    prm-alma-mashup{
         iframe{
              background-image: url("../img/diamonds-loading.gif");
              background-repeat: no-repeat;
              background-position: center;
         }
    }

    Recent Search Suggestions

    February 2021 PRM-43977
    Previously when users typed their query, Primo displayed autocomplete suggestions based on the metadata index only. With this enhancement, autocomplete suggestions for Primo simple searches are extended to include suggestions based on simple searches stored in My Favorites > Search History.

    When users select a recent search suggestion, Primo performs the search using the same search terms, tab, and scope of the matching search in Search History. Only the matching search and tab display for the recent suggestion.

    Primo_SavedSearches_Autocomplete.png

    Autocomplete Suggestions from Search History

    • Suggestions will start to appear after a user types at least two characters.

    • For all users, Primo will display only one recent suggestion, which is based on the most recent simple search in Search History.

    • For signed-in users, Primo will now retain the last 100 searches (including Advanced Search queries) in Search History. For more information, see Persistent Search History for Signed-In Users.

    Configuration Options

    This functionality is enabled by default at the institution level. If you would like to disable it, clear the Show Recent Search check box in the Institution Wizard (Primo Home > Ongoing Configuration Wizards > Institution Wizard).

    February 2021 PRM-43449
    Previously, CDI returned only the $$E subfield in the links/linktorsrc PNX field, which did not allow the link's label from being translated separately from the provider name. For example:

    <links>
        <linktorsrc>$$Uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/resrep02650?pq-origsite=summon$$EAccess_content_in_JSTOR</linktorsrc>
    </links>

    With this enhancement, CDI will continue to support the existing $$E subfield but will add the $$F (label) and $$G (provider) subfields to allow the label to be translated. For example:

    <links>
        <linktorsrc>>$$Uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/resrep02650?pq-origsite=summon$$EAccess_content_in_JSTOR$$FAccess_content_in$$GJSTOR</linktorsrc>
    </links>

    If the CDI record does not contain both the $$F (label) and $$G (provider) subfields, Primo will use $$E for the link in the Link section of the record's full display.

    In addition, if CDI does not return provider-specific information but returns the default text without the provider in $$E, you may translate this default text.

    <links>

    <linktorsrc>$$Uhttp://hdl.handle.net/10256.1/2568$$EView_full_text_in_collection</linktorsrc>

    </links>

    Configuration Options

    To support the customization and translation of the $$F and $$E subfields, you can now customize the following codes in the Full Display Labels code table, respectively:

    • default.fulldisplay.Access_content_in: Access content in {{provider}}

    • default.fulldisplay.View_full_text_in_collectionView full text in collection

    Persistent Search History for Signed-In Users

    February 2021 PRM-43977
    Previously, search history was tracked per session and was not saved between sessions in My Favorites. For signed-in users, Primo will now store the last 100 searches in My Favorites > Search History so that they are retained for suggestions in future sessions. Selecting a search's Pin icon will copy the item to Saved Searches and remove it from Search History. Although the same search can appear in Search History more than once, you will not be able add the same search to Saved Searches more than once.

    • Under Search History, the row containing the date no longer includes the time at which the search was performed.

    • During a session, searches performed prior to sign-in are not retained after sign-in. After sign-in, Search History will include searches from previous sessions and new searches performed after sign-in.

    Primo_PersistentSearchHistrory_Pin.png

    My Favorites > Search History - Pin Icon

    Under Search History, users can easily remove searches from their history by selecting them either individually or in bulk and then selecting the Delete icon.

    Primo_PersistentSearchHistory_Delete.png

    My Favorites > Saved Searches - Delete Icon

    For information on how to disable this functionality, see How to disable the option to save authenticated user's Persistent search history.

    UX Improvements to My Favorites

    February 2021 PRM-41651
    With this release the following usability improvements have been made to My Favorites:

    • When removing a record or group of records from My Favorites, users will now receive a prompt to confirm the deletion of the saved records:

      PVE_DeleteSavedRecord.png

      Row Action to Remove a Single Item
    • When adding or removing labels, the page no longer refreshes and focus stays on the current page.

    • After removing a record or records, the page will refresh and retain focus on the last item marked for deletion.

    Configuration Options

    This behavior does not require any configuration unless you want to customize or translate any of the following display labels in the Favorites Labels code table.

    Favorites Labels Code Table
    Code Description
    default.nui.favorites.removeSingleItem Remove this item?
    default.nui.favorites.removeSelected Remove selected items?
    default.nui.favorites.remove.no NO
    default.nui.favorites.remove.ok REMOVE IT
    default.nui.favorites.removeSelected.no NO
    default.nui.favorites.removeSelected.ok Remove selected

    • November 2021 PRM-45786
      You now have the ability to customize the logo height and style attributes returned in Saved Search email alerts. To support this functionality, the following components have been added to the Saved Search Email Alert Customization mapping table (Primo Home > General > Mapping Tables):

      • Logo Style – Customizes the style attribute of the logo returned in the Saved Search email alert. The default setting is width: 100px; padding: .85em;.

      For example, the HTML for the logo in the alert email will look similar to the following:
