    APA Changes in Legacy RefWorks

    • Product: Legacy RefWorks

RefWorks has launched a new version of APA 6th to address optional updates suggested by the APA blog (link).

The new version, APA 6th - No Title Casing Applied, New DOI - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition, removes the test 'doi:' that preceded the DOI field in all definitions. Users who wish to use this new RefWorks APA version can add this output style using the Output Style Manager in legacy RefWorks. The new APA 6th - No Title Casing Applied, New DOI - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition is not yet available in new RefWorks.

Other APA 6th versions in RefWorks do not reflect these optional updates.

    Changes made to the style:

Note the removal of the preceding text and its disappearance from the preview. This change (link) allows the user to specifically link to the article using the CrossRef (link) system that is being adopted by APA and other publishers. Notes are added to the field in all definitions:

When a DOI is present, the Links field will not print. Effective March 2017, Crossref has updated their DOI display guidelines, in part to ensure security (with https). For more details, see https://www.crossref.org/display-guidelines/ and https://www.crossref.org/blog/new-cr...re-on-the-way/

Their new recommended format looks like this:

    https://doi.org/10.1037/arc0000014

And here’s how that looks in an APA Style reference:

Morey, C. C., Cong, Y., Zheng, Y., Price, M., & Morey, R. D. (2015). The color-sharing bonus: Roles of perceptual organization and attentive processes in visual working memory. Archives of Scientific Psychology, 3, 18–29. https://doi.org/10.1037/arc0000014

Note the secure https and the simple url prefix doi.org.

Although we recommend moving to the new format, in APA Style manuscripts, we will be accepting the older formats (doi:10.1037/arc0000014 or http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/arc0000014) or the new format (https://doi.org/10.1037/arc0000014).

The DOI field is a free text field so data in this field will reflect exactly the metadata from the source. RefWorks does not “correct” this data. When available, the DOI field will be populated with data from CrossRef with the URL to the article being cited when using APA 6th - No Title Casing Applied, New DOI - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition.

Currently both presentations of DOI data are considered correct by APA.  ProQuest and RefWorks encourage all users to check the APA style blog for the most updated acceptance information.
