    Working with Demand-Driven Acquisitions (DDA)

Any user role that can access the Rialto Marketplace can view DDA-available offers.

If your institution is subscribed to a Demand Driven Acquisition (DDA, the same as Patron Driven Acquisition, PDA) agreement with a platform (see Patron Driven Acquisition), the Rialto Marketplace displays the electronic offers eligible for DDA with the DDA icon by the title.

    DDA-eligible offer

If an offer is eligible for DDA for any platform that is active for DDA, you can include it in your DDA pool for that platform. This means that starting from the moment of inclusion, the platform monitors the usage of this offer by the patrons. Offers that are used in such a way to trigger a purchase (e.g., total number of accesses, downloading the full text, etc.) will be automatically purchased by your library. The specific terms of access and triggers are defined by your DDA agreement with the platform.
Until the moment of purchase, while the offer is accumulating the required number of views, the offer is considered to reside in the DDA pool

For more information, see DDA Guide.

    • To begin using DDA in Rialto, reach out to ProQuest to coordinate initial configuration between Rialto and the hosting platform(s). As part of this process, consultants can help you configure a DDA profile for one or several DDA platforms.
    • Once you go live with using DDA profiles, or Selection Plans in Rialto, all profiling and adding to a DDA pool must be handled from within Rialto. Rialto does not presently monitor changes to a DDA pool triggered from other platforms or systems. If you need to update your DDA pool (e.g., to remove titles), contact ProQuest to coordinate this update with the platform.
    • To terminate a DDA program with a platform, reach out to ProQuest to clear your Rialto DDA pool of unowned materials.  Note that removing candidate records from Alma may also be required.

    Rialto DDA Workflow

Upon activation of DDA within Rialto, titles added to your DDA pool will be added to your Alma environment and made visible in your Discovery layer.

The method used to add DDA candidate records to your Alma environment may use Patron Drive Acquisitions (PDA) - which may be used for EBook Central or EBSCOhost, or Upload Electronic Holdings from ProQuest Ebook Central - which is available for Ebook Central:

    • For a library looking to implement Ebook Central DDA where the daily ProQuest Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration profile is activated, this will be used for loading to Alma the DDA candidate records linked to the CZ.
    • For a library looking to implement EBook Central DDA without utilizing the ProQuest Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration profile, or for any other platform (including EBSCO and JSTOR), a PDA profile will be activated and scheduled to load DDA candidate records.
    Method Description
Upload Electronic Holdings from ProQuest Ebook Central

When the ProQuest Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration profile method is active, all titles added to the DDA pool within Rialto will be loaded using the "Upload Electronic Holdings from ProQuest" daily job, set to run daily. All candidate records will be added under the Proquest Purchase Model attached to the electronic portfolio, with the indication on the portfolio as "DDA Candidate" records. As titles are purchased, this indication will be updated to show as owned and the Purchase Order line will be attached to the record.  This method will also allow for removal of DDA titles directly from LibCentral and these changes will be reflected within Rialto within 24 hours

    See Purchase Model

    Rialto PDA Profile

When local or institutional zone records are used for ordering within Rialto, a PDA profile will be created for each platform activated to use as part of DDA. This method will also be used if using CZ records for Rialto firm orders, without the Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration profile. In this case, the records will be added as local records to the selected Community Zone collection.

This profile will be used to load DDA candidate records added to the DDA Pool automatically via a schedule and will associate each portfolio with a representative PDA ID, which can be used for reporting and tracking within Alma and Analytics.

In the event that a title or titles need to be removed from the DDA pool, please create a case with Rialto Support to request the removal from the Rialto DDA Pool, Alma, and the platform.  For EBSCOhost DDA programs the customer will need to request the removal of titles from a pool from EBSCOhost.

As titles are purchased, a PO line will be attached to each portfolio using the New Order API linked to the Rialto Vendor.

    See Patron Driven Acquisitions.

    DDA Record Availability

As titles are added to the Rialto DDA Pool, they will be made available within Alma within 24-48 hours. This timeline applies for both the institutions using the Upload Electronic Holdings from ProQuest Ebook Central integration, or local files loaded through a PDA profile, and is based on the scheduled jobs relevant for both import processes.

Adding Offers to the DDA Pool

If your institution is subscribed to a Demand Driven Acquisition (DDA, the same as Patron Driven Acquisition, PDA) agreement with a platform (see Patron Driven Acquisition), the Rialto Marketplace displays the electronic offers eligible for DDA with the DDA icon by the title.

    DDA icon .png

If an offer is eligible for DDA, you can add it to the DDA program your library is running with the platform for the offer. This means that once added, the platform monitors the usage of this offer by the patrons. Offers that are accessed more than a certain number of times (the specific number is defined in the PDA agreement) are automatically purchased by your library. Till the moment of purchase, while the offer is accumulating the required number of views, the offer is considered to reside in the DDA pool

Note that the vendor needs to approve the addition of the title to the DDA pool. This may take from several hours to a few days. In the period prior to vendor approval, the offer is marked with the "Pending DDA" badge in feeds and other lists.

    Adding Offers to DDA

The following roles are required to add offers to the DDA pool:

    • Rialto Administrator, Rialto Manager, Purchasing Operator, Super Selector, Selector

To add the offer to the DDA pool, you need to specify the ordering library and indicate the fund that will be encumbered once the offer reaches the usage threshold defined in the platform agreement and is purchased.

In the case you are adding many offers to the DDA pool, you can speed up this process by changing the default option in the row actions list from Add to Cart to Add to DDA for the eligible offers.

To add an offer in the DDA pool:

    1. Select an offer that has the DDA icon by the title. The Configure DDA dropdown becomes available at the top of the list. Alternatively, you can select the Configure DDA first.

If you do not have one of the roles specified above, the dropdown does not appear.

    2. Open the Configure DDA option and select the ordering library, fund, and Reporting Codes for this title, then click Apply.

Adding Reporting Codes enhances internal reporting capabilities.
Reporting Codes selection in Configure DDA

    3. For a more convenient workflow, you can select the Add to DDA action as default for the current selection. This changes the primary action button from Add to Cart to to Add to DDA. This option works only within your current list of offers. Once you leave the current list of offers, the default option changes back to Add to Cart.
For physical offers, the default option stays Add to Cart

      • If you do not have one of the roles specified above, this option does not appear.
      • After you apply your DDA configurations, they remain persistent across the current browser session anywhere in Rialto, on other pages as well. Clearing this selection will clear it everywhere in Rialto. If your browser times out or you sign out of Alma, you will have to repeat your selection.

    4. To add the offer in the DDA pool, select Add to DDA in the row actions list.
The offer is added in to the DDA pool, and the Pending DDA badge appears by the offer.

    5. Once the vendor approves the addition to DDA, the badge changes to In DDA Pool:In DDA pool indication.png

To view the list of al titles that participate in the DDA pool in your institution, see Viewing Offers in DDA Pool.
For removing offers from DDA, see Removing Offers from a DDA Pool

    Adding Offers to DDA Automatically

In addition to manually adding offers to DDA, DDA-eligible offers can be added to DDA pool automatically, via Selection Plans, if these were defined by your Rialto Administrator. The Selection Plans allow library administration to create a feed of offers to be added to your DDA pool at a chosen frequency. They add a user-defined number of eligible records ('cap') to the pool. For details, see Selection Plans

The cap on the number of records that can be added to the pool within a single session is defined by the Rialto Administrator within the Selection Plan profile.

The frequency with which the profile runs is defined by the Rialto Administrator and it can be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Working with Offers in the DDA Pool

Viewing Offers in the DDA Pool

You can view the list of all titles that participate in the DDA pool on the Demand-Driven Acquisition Pool page (Market Automatic Selection Demand-Driven Acquisition Pool). This page displays all offers that are active within the DDA pool, meaning offers that patrons can view but which have not yet been purchased.

When DDA has been enabled in Rialto, this page displays all offers in your existing DDA pool(s), including those added manually or automatically via Selection Plans.

Currently, this page does not display offers that were added to DDA pool through other platforms directly. To set up DDA in Rialto, contact ProQuest.

Offers are removed from this list when they become considered as part of the holdings. This can happen due to any of the below reasons:

    • The offer has reached its purchase threshold (in terms of downloads, views, or any other activation criteria) and was purchased,
    • The offer was purchased via the shopping cart.

You can filter the list to see offers by a particular author, ISBN, Title, or by keywords. You can sort the list by price or publication year.

When the status of the offer is 'Processing', this means that the offer is either in the Shopping Cart (if it appears with the "In Your Cart" / "In Other Carts" badges) or a purchase was already submitted in Rialto.

Searching for Offers in the DDA Pool

On the Demand-Driven Acquisition Pool page (Market Automatic Selection Demand-Driven Acquisition Pool), you can search for offers by various means.

To search for specific offers included in the DDA pool:

    • By text: You can search for an offer by Title, ISBN, Author or Keywords. To search, select the desired option in the dropdown, enter the desired text and select search icon.png. To remove the text, click X within the dropdown.
    • By facets: To eliminate irrelevant offers from view, you can use the facets. In the facet list, select the values for which you want to see results. The facets selected to filter the list appear at the top of the Facets panel. Click X to clear the facets you want to remove. For a full list of facets, see Working with Facets.

The display of facet values is dynamic and reflects only the values that belong to offers available in the order history. For example, if you do not see a certain value in your facets list, this means that you do not have offers with this value in your DDA list.

Removing Offers from a DDA Pool

Users with the Rialto Administrator role are able to manually remove Ebook Central titles from within the Rialto DDA pool.

In order to remove DDA titles, the following conditions must be met:

    • you must also be enabled for Ebook Central on the new invoicing platform
    • the DDA pool and any associated deposit account must be managed within the new platform

Please contact Rialto support to enable this feature if the remove button is not actionable for you.

    • If you are using the Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration, turning off the visibility for any title in the DDA pool will also remove the title from the pool in Rialto.  This will also remove the title from Alma via the Ebook Central Auto Holdings integration.
    • For EBSCOhost and JSTOR DDA programs, offers may only be removed by contacting the platform directly or Rialto customer support to request removal.

To enable the "Remove from DDA" request, the DDA_REMOVAL privilege is added to the Rialto Administrator role. For details, see Role Privileges.

In the DDA pool management screen, administrators are presented with options to remove titles individually or in bulk per offer line. A confirmation message is displayed when initiating title removals.

Remove confirmation message displayed when an EBC title is requested to be removed from the DDA pool.

Remove from DDA pool confirmation message

Once a title has been selected to be removed, a "Pending DDA Removal" badge will appear that will display until the removal request has been successfully received by the platform.
When fully processed, the MARC record is deleted and the title will be removed from the pool.
