Summon: Full-Text Search of the HathiTrust Collection: FAQ

    • Product: Summon

Where can I find an answer to a question about the HathiTrust Collection in the Summon service?

HathiTrust and Serials Solutions have enabled full-text search of the entire HathiTrust collection via the HathiTrust Index. This include 13 million total volumes of digitized scholarly works and growing, from the Summon web-scale discovery service. Researchers at any library with the Summon service can now easily search for information in e-books and electronic journals, but now also the physical books.
What is significant about the HathiTrust collaborating with Serials Solutions?
This collaboration enables library patrons to discover information relevant to their research topic anywhere in the full text of a book or serial in the HathiTrust collection, making the full text of much of the library's physical collection as easily searchable as its electronic content. This significantly advances the level of service that libraries can provide their patrons. The work being done by the HathiTrust is truly monumental in the world of digital resource material. Through this collaboration, more of a library's collection will be exposed to patrons in exactly the right context. Inventive industry interconnections like these enable us to evolve faster and more effectively to serve the needs of your patrons.
By increasing the discoverability of your library's print collections through this agreement, the Summon service is giving researchers another reason to come back to the library.
How does this change the Summon service?
The Summon service already included metadata from the HathiTrust for quite some time. As of late 2011, there were changes to the depth of the material from the HathiTrust collection that can be searched by the Summon service by using full text from the HathiTrust Index.
The agreement will significantly enhance the discovery of print collections. Researchers will not only be able to discover content in e-books and electronic materials, but now also the physical books. The HathiTrust currently has 8.4 million volumes and the number continues to grow. The bulk of a library's print holdings is full-text searchable from the Summon service.
How does this impact researchers and librarians at institutions with the Summon service?
This agreement makes the full text of much of your library's physical collection as easily searchable as your electronic content. The content in books will now be as discoverable as the content of journal articles has been for the last 10 years.
Once a researcher using the Summon service finds the information they are seeking, can they access it from the HathiTrust?
If your library has selected the database HathiTrust (Public Domain & Copyright Works) in your Client Center profile, you will see links to HathiTrust whenever there is a record your library only has access to via HathiTrust. This means that if you used the e-Catalog in the Client Center to search for the book title or ISBN, it should either not be found or not be selected as Subscribed for your library. For any e-books that your library has a full-text subscription, OpenURL links will be used to provide users with access.

If your library has selected the database HathiTrust (Public Domain only) in your Client Center profile, you will see links to HathiTrust in the same case described above. The only difference is that only public-domain titles will be in your default Summon results. HathiTrust records that are copyrighted will appear to your patrons if they select the "Add results beyond your library s collection" option. These records will appear with the Availability message of "Citation Online" and link directly to HathiTrust.

If your library has not selected any of the HathiTrust databases in your Client Center profile, your users will only be linked to HathiTrust if they select the "Add results beyond your library s collection" option. As stated above, these records will appear with the Availability message of "Citation Online" and link directly to HathiTrust.
Will only libraries participating in the HathiTrust that subscribe to the Summon service benefit from this agreement?
Any library will benefit from the ability to search the full text of the HathiTrust collection from the Summon service. Material that overlaps with HathiTrust will be more discoverable, and libraries can easily add over 1 million public domain works to their collection, and be able to search the full text of this collection.
How do search results in Summon link to our library's physical book collections?
Summon uses match and merge to link your catalog records with the appropriate full-text indexing from the HathiTrust Index, so that the patron is led to the catalog record for print material, an e-book if available, or an open-source version of a public-domain work, as determined by you.
How do we choose the right HathiTrust Database for our library?
Choosing the right HathiTrust database is a choice between the HathiTrust Public Domain or the HathiTrust Public Domain & Copyright Works databases.
