Summon: Web of Science and Scopus Integration and Activation

    • Product: Summon

How do the Web of Science and Scopus integrations work with the Summon service and how do I activate one or both?

Web of Science Integration and Activation in Summon 2.0

Web of Science allows the Summon service to index and integrate Web of Science content and add citation counts to the search results displayed.

The Summon service uses Web of Science in these ways:

    • Summon receives and indexes "cited by" counts every two weeks.

    • Summon uses citation counts in its relevancy-ranking algorithm. This allows records with higher citation counts to display prior to citations with lower counts. This relevancy ranking applies all Summon service citations, regardless of Web of Science subscription status.

    • Summon links you directly to resources that you have rights to view. If you have full-text holdings for a result in a Summon search, the links will point to those locations. If you do not have full-text holdings for a result in a database or resource, the link will go to the abstract in the proper database.

    • Summon displays citation counts in the bottom right corner of a record for authenticated patrons of mutual customers. (See the screenshot below.)

When a patron clicks on the citation count in the Preview pane:

the user is taken to Web of Science to view the list of citing articles. From there, patrons can utilize your OpenURL link resolver to get the full text.

    Activate Web of Science

Web of Science provides citation counts to Web of Science subscribers. If you subscribe to Web of Science and add the Web of Science database to your profile, then the Summon search results will display citation counts. However, if you subscribe to Web of Science and do not add the Web of Science database to your profile, then the Summon service search results will not display citation counts.

To activate the Web of Science feature in your profile, subscribe to at least one of the following databases (from provider Thomson Reuters) in the Client Center:

    • Arts & Humanities Citation Index (database code AKT)

    • Science Citation Index Expanded (DTL)

    • Social Sciences Citation Index (DVR)

    • Web of Science (EGQ)

Do not subscribe to the following databases, even though they are similar. They do not work in the Summon service:

    • WOK Web of Science Arts & Humanities Citation Index

    • WOK Web of Science Science Citation Index Expanded

    • WOK Web of Science Social Sciences Citation Index

To keep Web of Science activated in your profile and not display the citation counts, use the Citation Counts Display setting in the Search Results section of the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console.

    Web of Science Known Issues

We subscribe to Web of Science but don't see results. Why not?

Not all Web of Science database packages include this content.

Citation counts are not displayed in the Summon service results, even though we subscribe to Web of Science and have added the database Client Center.

This could be caused by one of two things:

    • Your institution IP ranges are not included in your Summon configuration. If we do not have your institution IP ranges, send them to us using the Support Portal option.

    • The patron is not authenticated. Citation counts and other select metadata including links to content will only display when the patron is authenticated. To be authenticated the patron must be on campus or signed into the campus authentication system.

Links to Elsevier journal articles from the Web of Science do not get resolved correctly, leaving the patron with a "no access" message, or that the address is invalid.

In most cases this happens because the article link is going to a different URL (*.elsevier.com) than the journal link (*.sciencedirect.com). Elsevier's article linking syntax includes the string http://linkinghub.elsevier.com. Libraries using EZproxy can fix this by authorizing the hostname of this URL in the config.txt file.

Within this database's section of config.txt, the following line must be added:

    Host linkinghub.elsevier.com

The EZproxy server must then be restarted to make the change take effect.

Scopus Integration and Activation in Summon 2.0

Scopus allows the Summon service to index and integrate Scopus content and add citation counts to the search results displayed.

The Summon service uses Scopus in these ways:

    • Summon receives and indexes "cited by" counts every two weeks.

(See the screenshot below.). If you have both Scopus as well as Web of Science, and both have citation counts for the item, Web of Science "Cited by" will display to the left of the Scopus "Cited by" display.

    Scopus citation counts

When a user views the Preview pane for the item, the Scopus citation count is visible as well. At a later date, the Preview pane in Summon will provide access to Scopus in the way that the Preview pane currently provides access to Web of Science.

    Activate Scopus

Scopus provides citation counts to Scopus subscribers. If you subscribe to Scopus and add the Scopus database to your profile, then the Summon search results will display citation counts. However, if you subscribe to Scopus and do not add the Scopus database to your profile, then the Summon service search results will not display citation counts.

To activate Scopus and its citation counts feature in Summon, in your Client Center profile subscribe to the Scopus database from Elsevier (database code BKL).

To keep Scopus activated in your profile but not have citation counts displayed to your users, use the Citation Counts Display setting in the Search Results section of the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console.
