    Question

In AUTH_HEADING table, what is HEADING_ID_POINTER and the HEADING_ID_POINTEE?

    Answer

The HEADING_ID_POINTER always points at a HEADING entry.
The HEADING entry always matches the heading the AUTH_HEADING covers, even if the heading is actually a cross-reference. The AUTH_HEADING entry may actually cover a cross-reference--if it does, the HEADING_ID_POINTEE points at the authorized heading.
If the AUTH_HEADING entry is for the authorized heading, the HEADING_ID_POINTEE is 0. For name/title changes the headings will be name/title headings so will point at name/title HEADING entries.
