    360 KB: E-book Normalization Project Status

    • Product: 360 KB

    What is the status of the e-book normalization project?

    Update July 18, 2013:  Added note about stopping monthly updates

    We have created hundreds of thousands of e-book authority titles and normalizers as a result of our e-book normalization project, and continue to add more all the time. As we normalize more and more e-book holdings, you will see improved e-book results in your 360 Core, 360 Link, 360 MARC Updates, and E-Journal Portal services.

    The e-book normalization process enables us to accurately and consistently represent e-book holdings through our 360 services. Our staff librarians have developed algorithms that aggregate and authoritatively link holdings using title and ISBN data. The process aggregates variant titles, authoritatively links data from all available sources, and creates a single, normalized record for the title.

    Normalization helps increase usage and return-on-investment for e-books:

    • Library users have more consistent and streamlined access to e-books in the Client Center and E-Journal Portal;
    • Librarians don't have to spend time reviewing and troubleshooting e-books data; we scrub the errors, fill in the blanks, and correct the links to provide clean and consistent data;
    • Normalization enables us to provide better MARC records: You receive "add" records with the improved, normalized records, and "deletes" for the un-normalized records being replaced; and
    • 360 Link clients receive better results, because we can correct data before we connect.

    While e-book normalization progress continues each month, we have stopped providing the below monthly updates because such normalization is now simply part of our standard set of processes, just like it has been for e-journals for many years.

    The complete list of all e-book providers and databases continues to be updated each month.  Included in the list is a subset of those resources which have been added to 360 KB in the past month.
