Why do some 360 KB databases use DOI URLs?

Certain providers (e.g. Royal Society of Chemistry) provide us with URLs constructed from DOIs. For example:

    http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/3-540-37642-9

In such cases, we privilege the DOI URLs over other types of URLs (e.g. Open URLs, direct links) because they are persistent and more stable. They are also preferred by some providers.

For more information on DOI's, please visit http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/what-is-doi.aspx
