360 Search: Date-Range Searching Not Available

    • Product: 360 Search

Why aren't date ranges available for limiting searches in 360 Search?

The problem with date-range searches -- and this is an industry-wide problem -- is that not many of the vendors that support federated searching connections can support date-range searches. Date ranges in these cases are simply ignored, and for the most part the searches default to keyword only.
This is a feature that we would like to offer for 360 Search. But we are reluctant to deploy it until we are able to offer functionality that is effective across many providers, and can gracefully indicate errors when date-range searching is unsupported by vendors. So, while a date-range feature is definitely on our radar, it is not on our current development calendar for those reasons.
Clustering, with the ability to show date clusters, is our answer to patrons' needs to sort and review results by date. We feel that clustering offers a much more comprehensive solution at this time than we could if we were to deploy a pre-processing date-range search function that is only minimally supported by the content providers for whom we offer connections in 360 Search.
