    Linked Open Data

    Overview

    Alma is bringing linked open data into the library ecosystem, allowing customers to move gradually at their own pace to linked data formats and further capabilities.

    The features listed below that support BIBFRAME records in workflows will be released to the Linked Open Data focus group members throughout the coming year and will be generally available based on contacting the Linked Open Data product team starting May 2024.

    2024 H1

    Creating and Managing BIBFRAME Instances and Works with APIs - Early Access

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Libraries will be able to manage Linked Open Data records alongside existing bibliographic records.​ 

     

    • Provide the ability to create and update BIBFRAME Works and Instances through Alma's APIs.

    • Provide the ability to search Linked Open Data Instances in conjunction with all other records created in the different formats that exist in the catalog.

    • Provide the ability to manage relationships between records, including linking works to multiple instances.

    • Provide the ability to use Linked Open Data Instances in Acquisitions and Fulfillment workflows.

    Using Linked Open Data Instance records in all parts of Alma in end-to-end workflows will be possible.
    Availability for development partners.

    Linked Open Data - Support Core Functionality - Early Access

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Libraries will be able to manage their Linked Open Data records in Alma.​

     

    • Provide the ability to search for BIBFRAME Instance records in the staff search.

    • These Instance records will be available for use in Acquisitions and Fulfillment workflows.

    • Provide the ability to publish BIBFRAME Instance records as MARC records.

    Using Linked Open Data Instance records in all parts of Alma in end-to-end workflows will be possible.

    Linked Open Data – Cataloging via Sinopia - Early Access

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    The cataloger will be able to create BIBFRAME records in Sinopia and add them to the Alma catalog.

     

    • The cataloger will be able to create a Linked Open Data record using Sinopia.
    • The cataloger will be able to enrich their records using Linked Open Data sources, such as the Library of Congress, Wikidata, and Getty.
    • This will extend Alma's support for multi-formats.
    The cataloger will be able to perform catalog maintenance tasks more accurately with less effort.

    Linked Open Data - Linking BIBFRAME to Authorities - Early Access

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Libraries will be able to link BIBFRAME records to authorities in Alma.

     

    • BIBFRAME records (works and instances) will be able to be linked to LC names and LC subjects.

    • BIBFRAME works & instances will be enriched and searchable by the authority records they are linked to.

    • BIBFRAME works & instances will be updated when authority records are updated.

    Using Linked Open Data Instance records side by side along with other records.

    Adding VIAF and Linking it to Authorities

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Libraries will be able to add VIAF URIs to linked authorities in the Alma linked data enrichment process.

     

    • VIAF clusters will be added and updated in Alma.

    • VIAF URIs will be added to authorities that are linked and will be displayed in the linked data enrichment as part of publishing, on-the-fly conversion to BIBFRAME, and as part of the MARC APIs.

    • The subfield containing the VIAF URI will be configurable between $$1 and $$0. 

    Using VIAF URIs in linked data enrichment and linking different name authorities to expand the connectivity of the records.

    2024 H2

    Linked Open Data  - Info Cards in all Titles Staff Search

    Linked Open Data theme

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Librarians will be able to see info cards with additional information about contributors in All Titles staff search results.
    • The All Titles staff search will present short info cards regarding contributors based on local authority data and Wikidata.
    The staff and cataloger will enjoy a linked open data experience while quickly accessing external information from within Alma.

    Linked Open Data  - Info Cards in Metadata Editor

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Cataloger will be able to see info cards in the metadata editor with additional information about contributors.
    • While linking authorities in the Metadata Editor, Alma will present additional information from external resources other than the authorities to assist with the linking. 

    The staff and cataloger will enjoy a linked data experience while quickly accessing external information from within Alma.

    Alma Refine Lookups and Internal Enrichment of URIs to MARC Records in the Metadata Editor

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    The cataloger will be able to add URIs to records from external sources as part of the cataloging process in the metadata editor.
    • Expanding the linked data enrichment process to the cataloging workflow from existing authorities.
    • Adding External lookup capabilities to the cataloging workflow in the MD Editor.
    • The process will be configurable to match each institution's needs. 
    The cataloger will enjoy a seamless workflow for adding URIs to relevant subfields.

    2025

    Linked Open Data - Person Entity Page

    Linked Open Data theme

    What’s New Highlights Impact
    Librarians will be able to view the person page showing additional information and relations in the All Titles staff search results.
    • Provide the ability to view a person page that includes information from authority records and Wikidata.

    • Displaying relations between contributors and titles.

    The librarian will enjoy a linked data experience while viewing relevant external information regarding the entity and the relations that are held within the catalog.

    Linked Open Data - Searching for Works in the Catalog

    What’s New Highlights Impact

    Searching for Linked Open Data Work records in Alma's catalog will be possible.

    • It will be possible to search for Linked Open Data Work records by the record's metadata.

    • The search will display all Instance records linked to the Work record.

    The cataloger will have a simpler and quicker process for identifying Work records and the Instances linked to them.

    Linked Open Data - Knowledge Graph Integration

    What’s New Highlights Impact

    Integrating the Alma catalog with an external knowledge graph system

    • It will be possible to integrate the local catalog into an external knowledge graph system.

    Allow library users to search for complex queries and relations in a  graph database.
