    Introduction

The Newspaper Search enables easier newspaper content and collection access through a dedicated search option for users. The newspaper search provides access to over a billion newspaper articles and news resources. For the new Primo UI only, this enhancement improves the discovery of scholarly content in Primo by separating newspaper articles from the main search.

The key features include the following:

    • A separate search environment with the same look and feel as the Primo VE main search and results pages with the same configuration options for pagination, navigation, and sort options and facets.

    • Seamless integration with the main search with a newspaper resource facet that links the user directly from the main Primo VE results list to the newspaper search results list.

    • A featured newspaper lobby page that you can use to promote access to newspapers that are most important to your users.

    • Access to more than 350 newspaper collections - many more than previously available.

Activation and configuration of the new feature is performed through Alma's Discovery Configuration menu.

With this feature enabled, news items are removed from your standard Central Index (CDI) search results, increasing its focus on scholarly content.

To enable users to access the centrally-indexed newspaper content, Primo VE provides the following options:

    • The search box on the new Newspaper Search page enables users to search from all centrally-indexed newspaper collections, all featured newspapers, or a specific featured newspaper category.

    • The Featured Newspapers section on the new Newspaper Search page enables end-users to view and search featured newspaper categories that are configured by staff.

    • On the results page for regular searches that include your Central Index (CDI), the following options enable users to access the centrally-indexed newspaper content, which no longer appears in regular searches:

      • The Newspapers search facet value is included under the Resource Type facet in the Tweak my results section.

      • The Newspapers Search link appears after the last record on the Brief Results page.

    Types of Newspaper Content

Newspaper content from CDI is divided into the following types:

    • Hybrid – Newspaper content that is part of hybrid collections. When Newspaper Search is disabled, this content appears only in blended searches (CDI and local Primo VE). When Newspaper Search is enabled, this content appears only in Newspaper Search.

    • 80% – Newspaper content that comes from collections that our Content team has identified as containing 80% or more newspaper articles. When Newspaper Search is enabled, this content appears only in Newspaper Search. When Newspaper Search is disabled, this content is not discoverable in Primo VE.

The following table indicates where each type of collection is discoverable in Primo VE:

    Frequently Asked Questions

For additional FAQs, see Newspaper Search FAQs (Alma/Primo VE).

    1. If I enable Newspaper Search, how does it affect the results of newspaper content in blended searches?

Newspaper content from hybrid collections is no longer discoverable with blended searches (CDI and local). However, content from Hybrid and 80% collections are discoverable in Newspaper Search.

    2. If I disable Newspaper Search, how does it affect the results of newspaper content in blended searches?

Newspaper content from Hybrid collections is now discoverable using blended searches, and newspaper content from either type of collection is no longer discoverable in Newspaper Search.

    3. Which CDI collections will appear in Newspaper Search?

All CDI collections in which at least 80% of the articles contain newspaper content. For these collections to be discovered in Primo VE, you must enable Newspaper Search.

    4. How is Newspaper Search going to affect blended searches?

Primo VE will no longer return centrally-indexed newspaper content in regular searches that include your Central Index (CDI), such as the Everything scope. All centrally-indexed newspaper content is returned exclusively by Newspaper Search. If linking to centrally-indexed newspaper content is enabled for your view, users may link to the centrally-indexed newspaper results from regular search results if the scope of the search includes your Central Index (CDI).

All newspaper content that is indexed with your local catalog will continue to be returned in regular searches.

    5. How do I enable or disable Newspaper search?

Newspaper search is enabled at the institution level by selecting the Newspaper search checkbox on the Central Index and Proxy Set-Up page (Configuration Menu > Discovery > Other > Central Index and proxy set-up). For additional configuration information, see Configuring Newspaper Search for Primo VE

    6. What configuration options are available for the new Newspaper Search interface?

Apart from enabling and disabling Newspaper Search, you will also be able to control the display of Featured Newspapers on the Newspaper Search page. This section will be turned on by default, but it will only appear after you have uploaded newspapers of your choice to be featured. For information on how to enable and configure Featured Newspapers, see Configuring Featured Newspapers for Primo VE.

As with all other Primo VE features, all labels and text are configured with code tables.

    7. How do I know which collections are part of Newspaper search?

Newspaper search uses the same Alma full text and CDI search activation information as the standard CDI search results.

We have added a new filter to the Advanced search for Electronic collections in the Alma repository search to filter CDI collections with newspaper content:

      • CDI Newspapers = Yes, Newspapers search only – Identifies CDI collections that appear in Newspaper Search only. This option is especially helpful if you are testing Newspaper search on your sandbox because there are several new collections that are available only in Newspaper search. This may explain some of the differences that you will see in the number of search results between your sandbox (which has enabled Newspaper search) and the production environment that displays newspaper content only from CDI.

      • CDI Newspapers = Yes – Identifies CDI collections that appear in Newspaper search and other library searches in Primo VE.

    8. How can I ensure that the newspapers I subscribe to are flagged as available?

Because most newspaper collections are not selective, they are set to available at the collection level. This happens automatically as soon as you activate a collection in the collections list of your institutional profile for search.
