    Return to menu

As part of our Central Discovery Index project (CDI), we have created a graph database that contains relationships between records so that users can easily explore the following types of relationships from a record's Full Display.

    Supported Related Reading Relationships
    Relation from  Relation to Usage

    Books (local and CDI)

Chapters of the book (CDI only)

It enables users to view specific chapters from the book.

    Books (local and CDI)

Reviews of the book (CDI only)

It enables users to view any related book reviews.

    Chapters (CDI only)

Other chapters in the book (CDI only)

It enables users to view other chapters from the book.

Book chapters (full text or not) are returned in the results list, regardless of the selected filtering option (Available online or Expand beyond the library holdings).

Related Links in the Full Display

After displaying a record's full details, one or more links to information about related reading may appear for the record:

    Related Reading Links (Original UI)

    Related Reading Links (NDE UI)

The number at the end of the link indicates how many relationships exist with the record.

Viewing the List of Related Links

Selecting a related-reading link displays the related items, as follows:

    • In the original UI, a new tab opens and displays a results page, where users can decide which items to view.

    • In the NDE UI, the list of related links is included in the Full Display page itself, in a dedicated section for each type of relationship. Selecting a related-reading link moves the display to this section. Initially, the first five available related items are listed. Selecting the Show more items link below the list adds the next five available items, and so on, until all of the items are shown.

From the dedicated section, users can select an item to view it. The Full Display of the item then opens in a new tab.

Chapters of this Book section in the Full Display of a book record.

Chapter of this Book Section (NDE UI)

In some cases, when selecting the Chapters of this book link, the resource type of the records is displayed as Journal Article (not Book Chapter). This can occur for a collection with a book series having multiple volumes, each a collection of research articles. If most providers identify this content as a journal, CDI displays the merged record as a Journal Article.

For example, suppose CDI ingests and indexes the title Islet Autoantibody Detection by Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) Assay as a book chapter within a book from the provider Springer, and ingests and indexes the same title as a journal article published in the journal Methods in Molecular Biology from the providers PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest. In this case, the record appears as a Journal Article.
