Citation trails is an exploration tool that helps users (such as researchers and graduate students) to find related articles and to explore the topic of the seed article further. Primo VE matches the metadata provided by CrossRef with the records in CDI (Central Discovery Index) to build the citation trails. Only records that belong to the collections that your institution has activated for CDI appear in the lists.

In the NDE UI, accessing a record's citations begins either under the Citations section on the record's Full Display page or from a record on the Brief Results page. If citations are available, you can view related citations that either cite this record or are cited by this record. For example:

After selecting one of the citation links, the results list appears, which contains the related citations. In addition, you can see the path of selected citations above the results list. From the citation path, you can select specific records in the path to return to the selected record's citations. From the list of citations, you can extend the chain to the listed records by selecting a record's citation link.

The current Citation Trail functionality does not guarantee that for each record in the Cited In list, there is a corresponding link to the Cited By list. In some cases, there is no reciprocation between the Cited In and Cited By fields, and the Cited In field has a slightly better coverage than the Cited By field, which is because the source information for both links is different.
