About eBooks and ProQuest Management and Discovery Products

Providers, managers, and users want an easier and more consistent method to manage their eBooks content. ProQuest can provide ease of access to accurate eBook content through your OPAC, linking services, inclusion in our federated search, and improved electronic resource management tools. eBooks has a presence throughout our line of products, following the same conventions you use when managing and providing access to your serials collections.

eBooks appear as a separate content set in the Intota or Client Center interface. You have the option to make eBook content available through 360 Link, shown on your A-Z list, and add eBook MARC records if necessary.

Our list of E-Book Providers identifies all the latest providers and databases in the newest release of 360 KB. You can also use the library-managed holdings system to add books to your library-specific holdings. Refer to the OPAC Upload section below.

All eBooks are added to the Knowledgebase as books. Note that some eBook packages appear as serials by request of specific providers. We also have MARC records for eBooks from the Library of Congress, Bowker's Global Books in Print, the National Library of Medicine, and vendors (for more information about available vendor records, see 360 MARC Updates: Vendor Record Information). We advise you to assign top priority to the Library of Congress records for eBooks. You can also prioritize online versus print record formats.

Guidelines from the latest version of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), specifically the MARC Record Guide for Monograph Aggregator Vendors standards, were used as the foundation to build our customization framework.

We have several customization options available. Refer to E-Books Customization Forms for more information about customizing your MARC records.

Clients must create a brief record when there is no MARC record available for a resource if the client chooses the option to have briefs included in their delivery. The serials briefs generated from the legacy system will remain the same, but the eBooks briefs provide more data points than the serials briefs. This data is based on the data points obtained from the eBook providers.

You have the option of selecting title by title, at the database/package level (if available), or you can use the Offline Date and Status Editor tool (Intota information here; Client Center information here).

Titles are automatically linked together if they share the same type, ID (ISSN/ISBN), and title. However, sometimes the same eBook has different metadata from different publishers and needs to be manually linked together using a process called "normalization." Without normalization, there could be multiple titles for two identical offerings within 360 Link and 360 Core; in MARC Updates, it would mean multiple records are representing the same title. We have developed normalization tools and workflow for eBooks, and we are normalizing more and more eBooks all the time.

Clients prefer separate files for eBooks and e-Serials based on the feedback we have received. The reason for keeping them separate is because most OPAC loaders cannot accommodate the combined files.

You can upload everything from your OPAC including eBooks to Library-Managed Holdings. Library-Managed Holdings now supports eBooks import. Follow the instructions for including your library's print and/or individual e-Journal Holdings (Intota information here; Client Center information here).
