Description:
Our periodicals librarian wanted a way to search in the OPAC for the department/school associated with core journals in our catalog. I created a Direct Index for our ABC01 595##z field, using code '21' for filing in tab00.eng. I created an entry in the appropriate web files for an entry for it to appear in the OPAC search dropdown.

It works, but only if we put a '*' at the end of the first work. For example, if the department is named 'Physical Health and Wellness', we can only search for it by entering 'physical*'. If we just enter 'physical', it says no records found. If we enter 'health', it says no records found.

I'm guessing that I should have used a Word Index, instead of a Direct Index. Now that the Direct Index for 595##z is already created, I don't know the procedure to make it into a Word Index.

I would think that it has to be deleted first before I can create it as a Word Index, but I don't know how, or if that is correct.

Resolution:
In order to make the Search/Find entry also work without having to add the "*" (or "?") to each search, you need to change the following line it the abc01 tab100 from:

AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=N

to:

AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=S

Notes:

1. Though DEP is a Direct index, the AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND also applies to the Z11.
2. The use of "S" is described in KB 15792.
3. This change will *not* let you search for words in the middle of the Department name (such as "health" or "wellness"). In order to do that, you would, as you suggest, need to build a Word index on the 595## field. In that case, you would add a "WDP" to tab00.eng and tab11_word. You do not need to delete the DEP Direct index in order to do this.
