    Description:
How can we enter alternatives for American and British spelling search?

    Resolution:
v20 SysLib Guide, Web OPAC section, p 72-73:
14 Synonyms Dictionary for Word Searching (Optional)
ALEPH includes a feature whereby groups of words can be set as synonyms (words having the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the language). In this case, a search for any one of the words automatically includes a retrieval of all the words that have been defined as synonyms in the group. For example, if karel, karl, carol, charles are set as synonyms, a FIND on any one of these words retrieves the records which contain any of the other words.
Synonym groups are created and maintained through the UTIL-B menu of the bibliographic library, or through the Web Utilities. Web utilities are available from the Web Staff Menu; click Utilities, and choose the bibliographic library.

    Please note:
[1] These synonyms are maintained in Z970.
[2] There is no way to limit the search to just one of the forms (for example, only "color" or "colour") in searching once this is set up.
[3] Web Utilities are not generally a topic of training and are not covered in the documentation. They can probably be accessed by entering your library address with a suffix of S instead of F:
http://yourlibrary:8991/S. More options are available from the Web menu.
However, since the Web Utilities are no longer in general use, you will probably need to do some HTML configuration in order to access BIB library (only the USM library's appear by default).
[4] The UTIL-B menu was not visible in versions 18 and 19, although you could access it via "util b" from the command line or "util" and then ""b". It is again available from v20 forward.

    UTIL-B Example:
Enter the list of words that constitute a group of synonyms.
    - Separate the words by a comma, and do not use a blank after the comma; e.g. catalog, catalogue
    - Words with a blank cannot be entered; e.g. 'fire fighter' must be entered as 'fire-fighter' or 'firefighter.'
    - If one of the words listed is aleady linked to a group, the words in the list will be all linked to the existing group.
Enter the list of words (max 30):
    color,colour

Are you sure you want these words to be synonyms??
    color,colour
    Enter Y/[N]:y

An alternative method of updating the Z970 library might be to run file-03 to export the contents of the Z970 table and, after editing (perhaps on the PC), to reload it via file-04 or file-06. Please note that this will not include the background indexing that takes place when the update is done via UTIL-B (When manage-01 word indexing is run from scratch, before the system begins indexing the DOC records, the system first builds Z97 records from the Z970 table), so indexing would need to be rerun.
