    Desired Outcome Goal:
After setting up a z39.50 target configuration the client search is not working but reports "ERROR: Z39.50 gate error: Connection rejected by the Z39.50 database server." How to check whether the server is available?

    Procedure:
The best method to check if the connection can be established is to try it with yaz_client. See below example where connection is not possible. In this case contact the database provider XXXXX:

    andrea@il-aleph20(a22_2) USM01> yaz_client
    Z> auth nnn/nnn
    Authentication set to Open (LitALNet/litnet)
    Z> open tcp:nnn.n.nnn.n:nnnn
    Connecting...OK.
    Sent initrequest.
Connection rejected by v3 target. <--- Connection to database is not possible --->
