    Description:
KB 16384-21105 talks about how often we should restart Aleph.... In version 18 it seemed that aleph_startup closed existing processes which were running for the component being started; with version 20, it seems that this does not always happen.

Should it happen? Should it really be necessary to run aleph_shutdown?

    Resolution:
The aleph_shutdown script contains "kill" statements which assure that the existing processes are terminated. The aleph_startup (and the procs it calls) lack these.

Therefore, it is our recommendation that aleph_startup *always* be preceded by aleph_shutdown.
