Items with an arrival date of '00000000' - is this a problem?

Description:
One of our catalogers has noticed that we have a lot of Items with an arrival date of '00000000'. What would cause a record to end up with such an arrival date rather than a more appropriate value? Shouldn't all records receive a proper arrival date?

Resolution:
Typically serial items that have not yet arrived have this null date; otherwise this field is not populated for monographs.
