SICI searching: "Problem generating ISSN set" with hyphen omitted

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 17.01

    Description:
Using the Serials Bar in Acquisitions/Serials to search for a record by SICI, when we scan the SICI in, we receive the following error message - "Problem generating ISSN set". But when we type in the SICI (with the hyphen included) the record is found.

    Resolution:
The 022 field is stored in the ALEPH bib record with the hyphen included. The z11_text for the ISSN index also includes the hyphen.

The Z11-FILING-TEXT is built using tab_filing and typically has the hyphen compressed (no hyphen). When this is the case, a Browse of the ISSN can be entered either with the hyphen or without.

The "Problem generating ISSN set" message is issued by the serial2_find_issn and serial2_find_sici2 programs, which (via various other programs) call the set_find_build_ind_m program. This program is doing a Find against the *z11_text* (rather than the Z11-FILING-TEXT). Thus, it won't work if the query doesn't include the hyphen.

The barcode reader needs to be re-programmed to *not* strip out hyphens.
