Sorting of headings and browse positioning: p_manage_17, etc.

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 16.02

    Description:
Sorting of headings and browse positioning: p_manage_17, etc.

    Resolution:
In 14.2, with double-byte Z01-FILING-TEXT (the default, as distributed), p_manage_02 sorts the headings based on the first 34 characters only. When p_manage_17 is run it sorts the remainder of the heading (by calculating and populating the Z01-FILING-SEQUENCE, a number representing its position in relation to the other headings with exactly the same Z01-FILING-TEXT. In 14.2, with single-byte Z01-FILING-TEXT -- and in 15.2 and higher--, p_manage_02 sorts the headings based on the first 69 characters. When p_manage_17 is run it sorts the remainder of the heading (by calculating and populating the Z01-FILING-SEQUENCE, a number representing its position in relation to the other headings with exactly the same Z01-FILING-TEXT). When you enter in a Browse string online, the system will compare the first 34 (or 69) characters of that string to the Z01-FILING-TEXT. It will position itself on the first heading which has these same first 34 (or 69) characters. Assuming that p_manage_17 has been run, the headings following that will all be in the correct order. It's just that the Browse will not be positioned on the heading searched for but rather the first heading with the same first 34 (or 69) characters.;(continued) Examples: The headings are: United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act authorizing Seth Harding to locate certain lands in the territory of the United States north-west of the Ohio. United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act for the relief of persons imprisoned for debt. <4 headings omitted to make example shorter> United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act supplemental to the act, entitled, "An act for an amicable settlement of limits with the state of Georgia; and authorizing the establishment of a government in the Mississippi territory.". United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act supplementary to the laws now in force, fixing the compensations of the officers of the Senate and House of Representatives. United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act to divide the territory of the United States northwest of the Ohio, into two separate governments. (**If p_manage_17 has been run, the headings will be in this correct order regardless of whether the Z01-FILING-TEXT is 34 or 69.**) And let's say you enter in the Browse query: " United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act to divide the territory " With a 34-character Z01-FILING -TEXT, the Browse will position on the first heading ("United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act authorizing ...") With a 69-character Z01-FILING-TEXT, the Browse will position on the heading, "United States. Congress (6th, 1st session 1799-1800) Senate Act to divide the territory of the United States northwest of the Ohio, into two separate governments." Of course even with the 69-character Z01-FILING-TEXT, if there is more than one heading with the same first 69 characters, the Browse will position on the first of those headings.
