    Description:
    Which Filters can be replaced by Limit's or Refine?

    Resolution:
    We suggest eliminating Filters which do not do a new Boolean query but operate against the display-set alone and for which there is (or could be) an equivalent Limit or Refine. The filters we refer to here are those on the "Filter" screen (./www_f_eng/short-filter). If there are 50,000 hits and 5000 are displayed and you Filter for year, you will get the records in this year-range from the 5000 records only.

    Some filters have a Word-search equivalent "Limit" which can and should be used instead.

    Here is an evalution of each of the filters on the short-filter screen:

    1. range-on-data (filter-r): No word search equivalent. But not used much?.
    2. text (filter-s): Should not be used. Do a Refine on "word or phrase" instead..
    3. Year range (filter-y): Should not be used. Use year-from/year-to Limit -- as seen on the initial usm01 find-b page -- instead.
    4. Created-after-date (filter-a): No word search equivalent. Useful for "new records" since it's based on date added to system rather than publication date..

    [Pre-defined Filters].
    5. New records (filter-a): See #4 above..
    6. Available (filter-3): Filters result-set for items not on loan. No Word search equivalent. Not used much?.
    7. 1980-2000 (filter-y): Don't use. See #3 above..
    8. Refine ab: SET + CCL wrd = ab. Don't use. Do a Refine on "word or phrase" instead..
    9. Filter-heb: SET + CCL wln = heb. Don't use. Use language Limit instead..
    10. wyr = 1980 to 2000: SET + CCL wyr = 1980 -> 2000. Don't use this either. Use year-from/year-to Limit instead.
