    Question

Should call numbers in the item record be added with subfields? What is the advantage of adding call numbers with or without subfields?

    Answer

Adding the call number with or without subfields is dependent on the holding record. When you create holding records and add the call number there in field 852 it is transferred to the item record and in this case the subfields of field 852 ($$h, $$i etc. )are retained also in the item's call number field. If you are creating items directly (without linked hol records) there's no need to add the subfields.
