    pc_server terminates with "Execution error ..../update_statistics.gnt' "

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
All access to the server from the GUI stopped working just now. When I looked at the pc log I saw the error listed below. I stopped and restarted the PC server and can get into the applications now. However, I would like to know what this error means and if there is something that will come back again because of some underlying problem?

    Execution error : file '/exlibris/aleph/a18_1/aleph/exe/update_statistics.gnt'
    error code: 114, pc=0, call=0, seg=0
114 Attempt to access item beyond bounds of memory (Signal 11)

    Resolution:
The ./com/update_statistics program does a getenv for "create_statistics". If you have "setenv create_statistics N" -- which I see that you do --, then the program exits. But there have been other reports of this problem despite having "create_statistics N", so it seems that that is not the answer....

The same problem, for another site, where it was happening repeatedly, is open with Development as SI 16384-23533.

update_statistics is a *very* commonly executed program. I believe that there is no particular problem with this program, but that a more general problem manifests itself when this program executes.

The last entries (from April 2008) in the SI say:

Ex Libris: We have a non-confirmed suspicion that maybe the problem can stem from a too small /tmp disk.
Customer: We increased the size of the /tmp filesystem [from less than 1 Gig] to 2 Gig.

There have been no further entries since then.

I find that in addition to today's occurrance of the update_statistics.gnt, the Dec. 2 pc_server at your site also terminated with this gnt.

I see that /tmp on your server is 524 meg. I suggest increasing this to 1 or 2 Gig.
