Questions and Answers from the Introduction to Resource Sharing Webinars
These are questions that were asked by attendees during the Introduction to Resource Sharing webinars, and answers from Ex Libris training staff.
Week 1: Resource Sharing Fundamentals
February 11 & 12, 2025
Question from Attendee: Is temporary item location creation something you would do if the lending library said the item was "library use only"?
Answer from Clarivate / Ex Libris Staff: Yes, that is a potential scenario to use temporary item creation rules so that you can define different loan policies for this item.
So Rapid ILL will not be covered in the upcoming sessions?
No, this series focuses on physical resource sharing in Alma, and it will not cover RapidILL. For more information on RapidILL, please see the RapidILL Documentation.
Week 2: Peer-to-Peer Resource Sharing
February 18 & 19, 2025
Question from Attendee: Should our symbol be the same or different than our OCLC code?
Answer from Clarivate / Ex Libris Staff: Either way, what matters is that the symbol is unique for peer-to-peer Resource Sharing.
Is this Peer to Peer option commonly used do you know, e.g. in the US or Europe?
Peer-to-Peer Resource Sharing is used commonly in the United States. It is becoming more common in Europe/globally as well as it enables institutions to easily share resources with institutions who have implemented Rapido.
Week 3: Automated Fulfillment Networks
February 25 & 26, 2025
No questions from attendees were asked during the live sessions on Automated Fulfillment Networks. If you have a question on AFNs while reviewing the recording, please email us at training.services@clarivate.com.
Week 4: Broker-Based (NCIP) Resource Sharing
March 4 & 5, 2025
Question from Attendee: If there is an issue with renewing lent-out ILL items not properly updating on both sides, what is the recommended fix? We have Tipasa, but it doesn't seem to be communicating the updated due dates when we renew the loans through their system
Answer from Clarivate / Ex Libris Staff: Please open a Support case so our team can look at your particular configurations. If possible, please include an example in the case as well as the RenewItem NCIP message that is being sent by Tipasa.
What are some of the Brokers that allows messages from Alma?
I believe NCIP messages can be sent from Alma to Relais for renewal processing.
Is there anywhere we can go to get support for configuring Alma for our particular broker system? Or would we just need to communicate with our broker system? (I ask as we only have OCLC Worldshare which supports NCIP, but I do not believe is ideal for this.)
OCLC Worldshare does not currently support sending NCIP messages to Alma. If Worldshare enables the sending of NCIP messages, then the integration with Alma could be configured following the examples in this presentation.
What if the desired due date does not match your lending policy for the item? Which takes precedence?
Due dates are generally managed in the broker system.
If a bib has multiple item, we place a request for one item by NCIP api, but NCIP place the request to all items attached to the same bib. How to solve that problem?
[Follow-up] Thank you. We did put in item barcode, but still place all items that not my request barcode. We can give the details for troubleshooting. Could you share support team contact info?
Please share the example details as well as an NCIP message from the broker via the Support Portal.
Are you able to show how a borrowing request displays from the patron view, the "requester", logged in to their account?
Here is an example of how a borrowing request displays in Primo before it has been picked up from the hold shelf:
And an example of how the item looks when loaned:
Note: The exact display may vary depending on your configurations.
In borrowing with NCIP broker 'partner of last resort' should you process it through that broker and then receive it in ALMA as well? I do not think our broker is linked back as you described.
This depends on the broker system as well as your particular integration. If the broker does not send NCIP messages back to Alma, you can use the exported borrowing request to keep track of the requested item in Alma, but any updates would need to be made manually.
