LinkedIn MARC Records
LinkedIn MARC Records - Support Article (Post-Correction & Ongoing Deltas)
This article supports Support teams handling customer cases related to LinkedIn MARC records after the bulk correction of the collection.
It explains:
- What was corrected
- Why issues may still appear
- Why full MARC21 compliance cannot be guaranteed
- How corrections are handled going forward
- How Support should communicate with customers
What Was Done (Bulk Correction)
The entire LinkedIn MARC collection was processed using a correction script to address known, recurring MARC21 issues.
Corrections applied:
Field 100 – Personal Name:
- Removal of leading commas in $a
- Reformatting nicknames in quotes from $a to $q
Field 245 – Title Statement:
- Enforcement of ISBD punctuation (adding space-slash '/' before $c)
Important Clarification
The provider’s metadata arrives with errors, and despite requests, the provider confirmed they cannot correct the metadata.
Therefore, enrichment is not automated and requires manual preprocessing using scripts for each batch.
The script fixes:
- Field 100 (structure, commas, nicknames → $q)
- Field 245 (ISBD ' / ' before $c)
We cannot guarantee all issues will be covered, as patterns vary. Full responsibility for metadata quality remains with the provider.
Why Issues May Still Appear
- Provider continues to supply inconsistent metadata
- Script covers known patterns only
- New variations may appear
- Some issues originate from missing data at source
- Corrections are not fully automated
Ongoing Maintenance
- New files (deltas) arrive regularly
- Each batch is corrected via script before load
- Updates applied periodically (~every 2 months)
- New issues may appear between cycles
Key Limitations
- No full automation
- Provider does not correct metadata
- Future error patterns cannot be predicted
The LinkedIn MARC collection has been corrected for known issues. However, the provider metadata contains inconsistencies and is not corrected at source. Therefore, enrichment is handled via periodic manual processes and full MARC21 compliance cannot be guaranteed. Some variations may still appear and are addressed in ongoing correction cycles.
