    Changes to DOAJ linking strategy

Ex Libris will be changing links to journals and articles represented on DOAJ to go to doaj.org instead of direct to the publisher's site. We are doing this to provide a consistent user experience across all content discovered through DOAJ, and to provide an opportunity for the user to find more information about the journal/article even if the direct link may be broken. This information may be sufficient for the user to find the journal or article themselves through a web search.

Previously, the general strategy that Ex Libris has taken to linking to journals represented on DOAJ is to use the direct link that DOAJ has to the publisher's site at both the journal-level and the article-level (although there are some exceptions by product).

However, this approach has been unreliable, since OA titles often change location, and our links to the article and to the journal then break. DOAJ is regularly in contact with publishers to update this information, but there is a period of time where those direct links can remain broken.

Although this change may require a second click to get to the journal or article, our consultation with the community concluded that providing a working link was more important to the usability of DOAJ across the products.

These changes will occur: In SFX, the changes will be released on March 30th.
In Alma and 360, The changes should be live on March 24th.

Changes in Alma, SFX, and Primo

Currently all links in Alma, SFX and Primo for DOAJ default to the direct link when available. These vary widely in syntax and appearance.

    Journal-level (current): https://www.journals.elsevier.com/acta-psychologica

    Article-level (current): https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2021.103252

Example links after the change will all go to doaj.org:

    Journal-level: https://doaj.org/toc/1873-6297

    Article-level: https://doaj.org/article/9da5583bfc6...1648deaf9f27d1

Changes in 360 KB and Summon

Currently in 360, only the journal-level links for DOAJ default to the direct link when available. Article-level links use either doi.org links, or already link to doaj.org.

    Journal-level (current): https://www.journals.elsevier.com/acta-psychologica

    Journal-level (after change): https://doaj.org/toc/1873-6297
