Cannot connect to the pc_server port 6881 remotely via the Meditor client.

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: DigiTool
    • Product Version: 3

    Description:
Staff are not able to connect to their digitool server from their Meditor client on port 6881 remotely.
These sane staff CAN connect to their Web interface.
We think we have the appropriate firewall permissions and ports open and the University imposes no additional firewall restrictions outside of those of the library.

As a test, I added the following two lines in the iptable and restarted them:
    -A INPUT -s 207.56.64.194/255.255.255.0 -d 216.229.224.41 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 6881 -j ACCEPT
    -A INPUT -s 72.164.6.114/255.255.255.0 -d 216.229.224.41 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 6881 -j ACCEPT

After the iptable was updated I restarted the pc_server and tried to connect again but still could not.
Why can't I connect to port 6881 (but can connect to 8881 and 1801)?
The BitTorrent client uses port 6881, and so this might be a network issue.

    Resolution:
This is a somewhat common issue.
Often there are external firewall settings - sometimes even at the ISP level that the IT departments are not aware of - that cause this.
You will need to change the port in order to connect to the Meditor remotely.

    Additional Information

    6881, BitTorrent
