Why are we doing it?

Mixpanel is a web and mobile analytics platform that helps businesses track and analyze user interactions in their digital products. For NDE, it tracks anonymous real-time data about user behaviour, enabling libraries to understand the following activity to make data-driven decisions and to improve user engagement and retention:

• Get to know patrons better.

• Analyze user journeys to improve user experience.

• Identify drop-offs in user behavior to increase success metrics.

In addition, Mixpanel enables customers to generate insights and smart recommendations and to go beyond basic data collection and reports.

What is currently being done?

We are currently in a process of integrating Mixpanel into Primo VE, by sending a subset of Primo VE events directly to Mixpanel. This enables us to build out-of-the-box (OTB) dashboards that provide real-time, event-based insights and learn the capabilities of Mixpanel.  

We are working closely with the newly established Primo Engagement Analytics Focus Group, with participants from the following institutions: Dartmouth College, Freie Universitaet Berlin, University of York, SLSP consortium, University of Toronto, Drexel University, Weizmann Institute of Science, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Edinburgh and University of California. Where we have an ongoing collaboration and discussions on different aspects of the Mixpanel integration. 

We have also initiated an Early Adoption Program for a limited number of Primo VE customers. Customers that registered to this program can use Mixpanel Analytics alongside with their current OBI Analytics on top of their existing Primo VE views. The roll out of this program is planned for September – December 2024.  

In addition, while we are designing and developing the Next Discovery Experience (NDE) UI, we are sending events from the new interface pages to Mixpanel. We built the integration with Mixpanel mainly to serve the NDE Ui, where full set of events will eventually be sent and reported in Mixpanel and used as the only Analytics platform.  

When will development begin?

• Development and integration have already started and will continue through 2025.

• An Early Adoption program for a limited number of Primo VE customers is starting in September 2024. (Registration has already been completed.)

• The NDE UI was released in May 2025 for early adopters. In November 2025, other customers can begin switching to it. For more information, see Frequently Asked Questions - Go NDE.

• Mixpanel is available in the Production environment to institutions that are onboarding with NDE UI in the May release.

When will it be rolled out to customers?

Once your institution is onboard with the NDE UI in production, Mixpanel will be your new User Engagement Analytics platform.
