Summon: Results Counts vs. Facet Counts

Why are there discrepancies between the result count and facet counts?
The Summon service receives multiple records from various providers. When this happens, the Summon service merges duplicate records into one Summon record. The methods used to merge duplicate records can cause discrepancies between the counts listed for results and facets. An example is on sources that have been merged with multiple content types,
